Area Maintenance Supervisor

Position Purpose

The Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring that all Pallet, RPC and Container plants and equipment in the region is optimally planned, procured, installed, and maintained according to all corporate and legislative requirements. Ensuring that all plant, tools, and equipment always deliver optimal production under the safest conditions and maintaining minimal machine down time. The incumbent will be responsible for adhering to and maintaining all company, legislative and regulatory safe work requirements, and practices. He/she will be required to cost, and time estimates of the planned maintenance work and prepare applicable technical documentation to promote quality and defect-free maintenance work.

Responsibilities

People and Safety

  • Promotes and fosters the CHEP culture of Zero Harm
  • Maintains the corporate safety strategy in all plants
  • Manages and controls Operational and Engineering strategic goals and objectives
  • Recruits, motivates and develops subordinate staff which includes succession planning.
  • Uses effective people management and communication skills
  • Ensures that good communications, sound relationships are maintained
  • Assists and prepares for GAP, SEMP and Environmental audits by assisting and ensuring that

the region is compliant to the set of requirements.

Cost and Metrics

  • Drives efficiencies throughout the plant in order to reduce cost.
  • Ensures that all plants in the region deliver optimum production through their plant and

equipment

  • Proposes and presents projects and plans for new plant installations and replacements

through effective cost saving initiatives

  • Drives ‘over time’ down and reduces plant ‘down time’ that are caused by maintenance
  • Reports monthly to Management on all maintenance costs, expenses, and overtime
  • Assists in vendor creation and getting the best service out of our current vendors.
  • Assists in developing and implementing SLAs for contract suppliers
  • Responsible for the up-keep and accuracy of equipment maintenance history and job records

  • Perform root cause analysis and conduct investigations
  • Schedule maintenance work into production plans

Stock Management

  • Assists plants in managing stores and maintenance stocks efficiently.
  • Ensures that the plants are efficiently and effectively stocked with the necessary tools and

equipment to support the PMS programme

Quality

  • Ensures that the minimum quality standards are maintained
  • Sets high standards on equipment received and ensures that all equipment delivers desired

results in volume and quality.

Plant and Property Maintenance

  • Ensures overall compliance to all CHEP Operational SOP’s as well as local laws which

includes LRA, BCEA, EE, OSH Act

  • Ensures that all plants in the region have a controlled preventative maintenance plan in place.
  • Promotes and manages the safe, efficient, and effective use of all plant and equipment.
  • Ensures that all breakdowns are attended to immediately
  • Assists in the Designs, Installations and Commissioning of new plants.
  • Plans for expansion

Classification: General

  • Is an expert on the PMS (Plant Maintenance System) for SAP

Operational Systems

  • Ensures that all legal and statutory requirements (such as labour legislation) as well as Company

policies and procedures applicable to the Operations function are implemented

  • Ensures efficient and effective operating methods (i.e., for inspection, repair, manufacture, etc.)

are developed and maintained to achieve productivity, quality, and cost targets.

  • Ensures that purchasing systems are applied in line with best practice.

General

  • Ensures the effective management of planned maintenance for all plants
  • Ensures the adequate security and control of all Company assets in the Region
  • Develop and maintains effective relationships with suppliers.
  • Ensures that all products and services meet Customer satisfaction

Qualifications

Required: Millwright or suitable qualification in the mechanical or electrical engineering field Advantageous: An accredited Mechanical or Electrical Eng degree

Experience

Incumbent should have between 5-10 years’ experience in the mechanical and electrical fields. (Specific exposure to Allan Bradley and Siemens systems will be advantageous), which includes approximately at least 3 years managerial experience. Specific exposure and experience to the design and implementation of PMS through SAP is a requirement.

Skills and Knowledge

Computer literacy (SAP, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)

Assertive with good communication, organisational and negotiation skills ( Written and oral)

Sound business and commercial acumen.

Ability to read and interpret vendor manuals and drawings

To perform basic cost analysis
