As part of our R&D Engineering team, you will work closely with Project teams to develop early-stage technologies to address significant unmet clinical needs that impact patients’ lives around the world.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Edwards Lifesciences Metals Center of Excellence (MCoE) and work with a dedicated team of engineers focused on providing expertise in medical device implants for metal components. As a subject matter expert within the MCoE, the Senior Engineer will advance the development of our Nitinol shape setting capabilities utilizing design tools and predictive engineering methods. This role will also support multiple business units to improve current products thru optimizing the upcoming technologies and therapies. This is a highly visible position in which the engineer will be working side by side with industry leading experts.

You will make an impact by...

  • Leading in improving, designing, and optimizing nitinol processing, analyzing results, providing recommendations, and developing reports based on engineering principles that translate to innovative products.
  • Supporting project teams to optimize device shape setting design and performance by utilizing design tools and predictive engineering methods (e.g., CAD, FEA, and optimization).
  • Analyzing and evaluating experimental data to create recommendations on optimal metals processing to yield expected mechanical performance.
  • Presenting analysis results to stakeholders and contribute to publishing internal reports and technical summaries.
  • Proactively identify issues, achieve resolution, and resolve problems of significant complexity in designing parts, components, and subsystems.
  • Working in a cross-functional team environment and collaborate with R&D, NPD, Quality, Manufacturing, and Material Science groups to meet project objectives.
  • Creating, testing, and/or improving products by developing complex experiments and tests (including writing and executing protocols), analyzing results, making recommendations, and developing reports, based on engineering principles.
  • Generating work instructions, test methods, engineering models and drawings/prototypes, etc., to establish/characterize product and/or process specifications.
  • Assigning R&D support tasks; giving instructions to technicians on conducting tests; training technicians and providing feedback; coordinating technician work.
  • Training, coaching, and guiding lower-level employees on routine procedures
  • Identifying and ensuring implementation of opportunities to optimize/improve manufacturing processes including using engineering methods (e.g., SIX Sigma and LEAN methods) employing technical design skills to re-design/design of and ensure equipment, tools, fixtures, etc. are up to standards

What you'll need:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechanical, Material Science or Metallurgy preferred, + minimum of 4 years’ experience is required or

Master's Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Mechanical, Material Science or Metallurgy preferred, minimum of 3 years’ experience is required or

Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering, Mechanical, Material Science or Metallurgy preferred

What else we look for:

  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks or Creo)
  • Experience with FEA modeling and/or principles
  • Experience with metals (Nitinol, Cobalt Chromium, Stainless Steel)
  • Knowledge in metals processing (laser cutting, shape setting, oxide removal, electropolishing)
  • Strong documentation, communication (e.g., written and verbal) and interpersonal relationship skills including consultative and relationship management skills
  • Basic understanding of statistical techniques
  • Previous experience working with lab/industrial equipment required
  • Substantial understanding and knowledge of principles, theories, and concepts relevant to Engineering
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Substantial understanding of processes and equipment used in assigned work
  • Proven expertise in usage of MS Office Suite
  • Good leadership skills and ability to influence change
  • Strict attention to detail
  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work in a team environment, including inter-departmental teams

Ability to interact with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations

Aligning our overall business objectives with performance, we offer competitive salaries, performance-based incentives, and a wide variety of benefits programs to address the diverse individual needs of our employees and their families.

For California, the base pay range for this position is $103,000 to $146,000 (highly experienced). The pay for the successful candidate will depend on various factors (e.g., qualifications, education, prior experience). Applications will be accepted while this position is posted on our Careers website.
