This person will have the opportunity to make important contributions to on-going and future R&D programs in computational design of electrically small antennas to support applications in national security, including very low frequency (VLF) communications and low-profile antennas.

In this role you will:

  • Design and optimize electrically small antennas
  • Perform full-wave electromagnetic simulations to analyze antenna designs
  • Develop and apply optimization methods to improve the performance of antenna designs
  • Assist with fabrication and testing of optimized antennas
  • Apply your scientific creativity to develop technically-adjacent research areas, such as metamaterial antennas
  • Conduct business development and contribute to white papers and proposals
  • Provide technical briefings and reports and support client engagement
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary staff

The successful candidate will be creative, self-motivated, demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and work well in a team.

SRI International is an independent nonprofit research organization with a mission to create world-changing solutions that make people safer, healthier, and more productive. From the computer mouse to robotic surgery, cancer treatments, and more, SRI’s 75 years of innovation have created new industries, billions of dollars in market value, and lasting benefits to society. SRI was instrumental in the creation of the internet, high-definition television, and the U.S Postal Service’s automated letter sorting system. Some of its many successful spinout companies include E-Trade, Siri, Symantec, Intuitive Surgical, and Nuance.

The Space & Survivability Lab within the Advanced Technology and Systems Division at SRI is home to several collaborative groups performing research and development in a variety of areas, including electrically small antennas, optical materials, photonics, advanced sensing systems, nanofabrication, energetic materials, radar systems, and atmospheric science. The primary goal of our lab is to apply cutting-edge research to address applications in national security.

Responsibilities

  • Apply antenna concepts and terminology to guide the optimization of electrically small antennas
  • Use commercial software such as Ansys HFSS, COMSOL Multiphysics, or Lumerical to analyze and optimize antennas
  • Develop and apply optimization codes, such as topology optimization, shape optimization, and genetic algorithms, to optimize antenna designs
  • Assist with fabrication and testing of antennas, including anechoic chamber measurements
  • Review literature to identify competing approaches and alternative solutions
  • Contribute to project reports and customer briefings
  • Contribute to white papers and proposals

Qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related discipline
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance. Current clearance is a plus.
  • Limited travel required.

The salary range is: $127,400-$163,015. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles. Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
