This Application Engineer role is based out of the technical site in Wixom, MI and is a global resource to support chemical adhesives products for structural adhesives and electronic material customers worldwide. This role will directly and independently interface with customers and travel domestically and internationally as needed. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, supporting all APS products and materials through customer onsite trials, customer visits, internal lab work, report communication, training and interfacing with all functions to solve customer issues. High preference for experience with mechanical equipment such as Meter Mix Dispense (MMD) equipment. Preference for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CSF) or Computer Aided Design Software (AutoCAD, Solidworks, CATIA) 

This is a lab based position that will be onsite 5 days a week. Travel up to 50% of the time will be required. 

  • Project leader for new innovative process development projects and scale-up projects of medium complexity. 
  • Collaborate with Product Development/Application Engineering/Manufacturing/Regional Teams/Business Teams and Process Development staff to achieve project results. 
  • Communicate verbally and in writing regarding various topics to management, manufacturing facilities, peers, and decision makers. 
  • Able to evaluate current chemical manufacturing processes and identify areas of improvements regarding safety, quality, throughput, cost of manufacturing, simplify process, and/or eliminate waste.
  • Technical ability to identify new solutions, new equipment, new suppliers for existing challenges. 
  • Responsible for insuring achievement of appropriate safety, quality, quantity, cost-effectiveness, reproducibility, and timeliness of results. 
  • Lead external trails with suppliers. 
  • Design of experiments, utilize advanced statistics, chemical analysis sensor to troubleshoot process problems. 
  • Promotes safety and may lead in the development of new lab safety procedures. 
  • Conducts training for staff. 
  • Requires up to 50% travel within the US, sometimes on short notice. International trips are possible. 
  • Education: 
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or similar with 4 yrs of relevant work history. If you have a Master's Degree, we prefer 2 yrs of experience. 
  • Other Qualifications: 
  • Mechanical aptitude to select, troubleshoot, and implement new equipment and processes in a customer chemical manufacturing environment. 
  • Requires the handling of chemicals and must possess strong safety awareness with adherence to company quality standards; adherence to quality standards and ethics policy. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment. 
  • Ability to use and understand statics and use statistical software such as JMP/Minitab
  • Ability to utilize computerized equipment and computer software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Suits and SAP. 
  • Technical Knowledge: Applies extensive technical expertise and has fully knowledge of other related disciplines. Intermediate knowledge of products and/or industry, detailed customer applications, detailed value proposition elements. 
  • Impact: Completes medium complexity projects. Leads portions of projects as a team member. 
  • Problem Solving: Track record of implementing technical solutions to a wide range of challenging problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organization objectives. Expert understanding and utilization of engineering tools, methods, processes (FMEA, process audits, troubleshooting methods, etc)
  • Liaison: Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represent organization in providing solutions to different technical issues associate with specific projects.
