Welcome to Perennial.

Perennial is an ag-tech and climate tech company on a mission to revolutionize the way the world approaches regenerative agriculture. Globally, soils are recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as one of the largest, fastest potential methods of mitigating climate change by drawing down 3-5 billion metric tons per year of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Perennial is scaling up the agriculture industry’s ability to fulfill that potential by providing purpose-built software and scalable measurement & verification technology that helps our customers incentivize regenerative agriculture globally. Our flagship product is the world’s most advanced remote measurement technology for soil carbon sequestration and emissions, which fuses machine learning, ground observations, and satellite data to map soil carbon content from field to continent scale.

We’ve raised $25M+ to date from leading investors including Temasek, Bloomberg, and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, and we serve customers throughout the regenerative agriculture value chain. At Perennial, you will work in a mission-driven and collaborative environment alongside a diverse team with backgrounds spanning science, technology, carbon markets, and agriculture.

Our headquarters are located in Boulder, CO USA. We are a fully-flexible company for remote and hybrid work.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Applied Scientist specializing in agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification and mitigation programs. You will play a critical role in pioneering methodologies for Scope 3 GHG accounting within the agricultural sector, including the development, implementation, and refinement of cutting-edge GHG quantification and verification techniques. Your expertise will directly contribute to creating scalable solutions that integrate seamlessly into our technology platform, enabling accurate measurement of GHG emissions, removals, and carbon intensities in agriculture from field to region scale.

The role demands a blend of innovative research and practical application, requiring you to work closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and product managers. Additionally, engagement with external stakeholders—farmers, agribusinesses, and sustainability organizations—is crucial for validating and enhancing our GHG accounting methodologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world impact, contributing significantly to the global transition towards sustainable agricultural practices. See our work with Verra for an example of how Perennial is contributing to the advancement of agricultural GHG mitigation.

What You'll Own:

  • Methodology Development: Spearhead the creation of innovative Scope 3 GHG accounting methodologies tailored for the agricultural sector in the USA and LATAM. This involves conceptualizing and refining frameworks that can accurately measure and report GHG emissions and removals, ensuring they are in line with international standards and best practices.
  • Validation and Implementation: Take the lead in applying these methodologies within real-world agricultural settings. This includes conducting pilot tests, analyzing data to ensure accuracy and reliability, making iterative improvements based on feedback and observed outcomes, and deploying approaches that work at scale.
  • Cross-disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with our team of engineers, data scientists, and product managers to integrate GHG quantification methodologies into our technology platform.
  • Scientific Communication and Stakeholder Engagement: Actively contribute to the scientific and sustainability communities through the publication of research findings, participation in conferences, and other forms of outreach. You will represent Perennial as a thought leader in agricultural GHG quantification, sharing knowledge and advocating for innovative approaches to climate change mitigation in agriculture.

What You'll Bring:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Soil Science, Agriculture, Climate Science, or related field.
  • Familiarity with at least one leading major protocol for agricultural Scope 3 accounting and/or carbon crediting (e.g. IPCC, GHG Protocol Land Sector Guidance, SBTi FLAG, VCI, ISO 14064, Verra VM0042).
  • Knowledge of the major emission and sequestration sources across agricultural activities (e.g. soil organic carbon, nitrification/denitrification, enteric fermentation) and how to choose and apply the correct emissions factors.
  • Experience with LCA methodologies, databases, and best-practices.
  • Experience in statistical modeling and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming and prototyping your models or ideas in code.
  • Excellent written, technical, and verbal communication skills.

What will make you stand out:

  • Prior experience working with stakeholders in agricultural offsetting or insetting.
  • Experience using large-scale agricultural census data to create GHG inventories.
  • Experience creating and analyzing sampling designs for soil carbon quantification.
  • Experience with one or more agricultural process-based models (e.g. DayCent, RothC, DNDC, Ecosys, SALUS, MEMS, etc.)
  • Experience with uncertainty analysis and estimation.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing data or tools like Google Earth Engine.
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques.
