We are hiring! AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Phoenix, AZ office. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to providing tailored solutions across all phases of high temperature metallurgical projects, in ferrous and non-ferrous commodities and contribute to the leadership of the mechanical engineering department for North America.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • To set a prominent example of safety and integrity in the workplace. To adhere, support and promote Company Quality Management System, HSE requirements, Ethics and Integrity policies and procedures.
  • Providing expertise in selecting and sizing material handling equipment, including belt conveyors, feeders, apron feeders, screw conveyors, with a specialization in high-temperature mechanical equipment used in metallurgical processes.
  • Calculation of conveyor motor horsepower and preparation of comprehensive material handling packages, including requisitions, technical specifications, and data sheets, along with conducting technical bid evaluations and vendor document reviews for both standard and high-temperature equipment.
  • Proficiency in designing platework for chutes, hoppers, bins, and high-temperature mechanical equipment like metallurgical furnaces, kilns, converters, pots, and ladles, emphasizing safety and integrity in design.
  • In-depth knowledge of material flow, mass flow bins, chute design, and general arrangements for comminution equipment, materials handling, classification equipment, tanks, bins, ductwork, and high-temperature equipment used in pyrometallurgical plants.
  • Ability to design, analyze, and optimize a broad range of material handling systems, including those involving high-temperature processes, with a focus on safety and quality.
  • Leadership in equipment selection, optimization, trade-off studies, and reporting, while ensuring that vendor drawings conform to engineering designs for high-temperature applications.
  • Collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team to contribute to technically complex solutions, maintaining departmental and client standards, and coordinating with other disciplines to ensure timely and accurate design information flow.
  • Providing mentorship to other team members by any means possible, including overseeing groups of mechanical engineers and designers working on projects, and providing technical guidance and supervision for high-temperature mechanical equipment.
  • Participation in field engineering assignments and equipment shop visits for fabrication reviews, quality management, and safety checks, especially for high-temperature equipment.
  • Contribution to cost estimating in various project phases, preparation of labor estimates for mechanical activities on proposals, and continuous development of design standards to enhance safety, reduce costs, and improve work quality for both standard and high-temperature applications.

What will you contribute?

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Licensed Engineer, or eligible for registration.
  • 10+ years relevant experience in the minerals and metals industry, including experience in mechanical lead roles.
  • Strong ethical and integrity reputation with peers.
  • Familiarity with API, ANSI, ASME and CEMA standards and codes.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Plant3D, Solidworks, Microstation, or another CAD and modelling tool.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken) communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude.
  • Strong logical and problem-solving skills.
  • Desire to perform design engineering and enjoys significant technical challenges.
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.
  • Substantial experience working on complex metallurgical projects, with specific knowledge in high temperature process equipment and high temperature metallurgical plant designs.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical equipment installation requirements in the field.
  • Strong experience in interdisciplinary coordination.
