We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Project Design Team here at Springfields Site in Preston, Lancashire, as a Senior CE&I Design Engineer. The selected individual would become a key member of the Project Design Team, taking responsibility for a small team of CE&I Designers, delivering CE&I engineering designs for new & existing facilities across the Springfields Nuclear Licensed Site. From time to time, the candidate would also be required to work alongside our external design partners within the supply chain, to support their engineering design outputs, which supplement the output of the site-based design team at Springfields.

Duties will include overseeing all aspects of CE&I Engineering designs, from concept phase, initial design, through to detailed design, ensuring that the functional & nuclear safety requirements for the design are met. The selected individual would be conversant with all relevant internal / national (UK) / international standards, UK Office of Nuclear Regulation Nuclear Site Licence Conditions and Environmental requirements, and would ensure that all designs are fully compliant with these, whilst also managing design delivery to meet the agreed programme delivery targets. Typical packages of work would include the development of CE&I designs, through to final installation / commissioning and hand-over to the end user. This will include, but will not be limited to, the generation of engineering drawings, calculations, equipment specifications, design governance documentation, commissioning and hand-over documentation, engineering substantiation documentation, etc. From time to time, there may be a requirement for the individual to visit suppliers’ premises, to discuss products and witness equipment trials & testing, which on some occasions, may require an overnight stay. The role will predominantly be carried out at the Springfields Fuels Limited (SFL) site at Preston, Lancashire, with flexible remote working offered up to a maximum of 2 days per week, once a 6-month on-site probation period has been completed. The role offers an opportunity to work in an exciting and growing environment, delivering CE&I design packages for new build facilities, existing operational production plants, laboratories, and site infrastructure support departments.

Your Day to Day:

  • Adherence to company safety rules/procedures and demonstrable evidence of compliance with legislative and regulatory standards in a highly regulated industry. Take a pro-active role with regards to all aspects of Conventional and Nuclear Safety
  • To ensure that all engineering designs you are involved with meet the appropriate internal / national / international standards, Nuclear Site Licence Conditions (UK ONR SLC’s, SAPs & SFL EDSPs) and comply with the UK Construction Design & Management (2015) Regulations
  • Ability to produce, check, and provide technical oversight of CE&I key deliverables documents/reports, calculations, schedules, drawings etc. to project programme and appropriate quality standards
  • Able to work collaboratively with other disciplines, stakeholders, and the wider project team
  • Experience and ability to deliver projects at a variety of lifecycle stages from scoping through to operational handover and close out. Experience planning, monitoring, and managing DesigDelivery of CE&I engineering designs for engineering projects and production of quality design deliverables within the project programme and budget. To include engineering design drawings and documentation, etc
  • Delivery of design governance documentation to support the Design Office Safe System of Work for engineering projects.
  • Ability to provide support and to lead technical and project meetings when required to do so
  • Provide support to our external design partners within the supply chain, to assist them with their engineering design outputs and review their design submissions. Experience of managing engineers, designers, and supply chain contracts
  • Apply Human Factors principles throughout the undertaking of all design works
  • Preparation of engineering drawings, technical specifications, data sheets, Outline Installation Method Statements, test documentation and general design documentation to support design, installation & commissioning activities.
  • Provide a level of ‘Design Technical Support’ to the Construction and Commissioning teams during the installation & commissioning phases for projects
  • Maintain good communications between all project stakeholders (client representatives, project manager, internal / external design teams, internal stakeholders, equipment suppliers, site Design Authority representatives, planner, cost controller, construction & commissioning teams)
  • Respond to Technical Queries throughout the Design, Installation & Commissioning stages for the project
  • Experience, ability and a desire to support & mentor less experienced engineers, graduates and apprentices
  • Attend supplier’s premises to provide a level of technical surveillance to inspect equipment and witness testing of equipment. On occasions this may require an overnight stay
  • Undertake mandatory WEC training to keep abreast of company training requirements. Undertake external training courses to maintain a level of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Some training may be conducted externally and may require an overnight stay.

  • Possess a good working knowledge of the different aspects of the project process, such as design, project management, estimating / cost control, planning, risk management, communications and stakeholder management.
  • Must have significant demonstrable experience (10+ years) in CE&I Project Delivery within a Design Office environment.
  • Possess a good level of experience in the coordination, supervision & mentoring of CE&I Designers, CAD Operators and Junior Engineers, and have the ability to provide technical advice & guidance in the planning and execution of engineering and design activities.
  • Competent / awareness in the use of 21st Century Engineering Tools, i.e. AutoCAD, Inventor / 3D Design Software/ Vault / Trimble Amtech / Sistema / etc.
  • Competent in the design for Building Services systems, including LV distribution, Lighting, Fire Alarm etc.
  • Experience in the delivery of engineering designs to meet the requirements of the CDM Regulations in a Design Environment.
  • Competent in the application of 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
  • Knowledge & Experience of the CE (UKCA) Marking process.
  • Knowledge & experience of how the Nuclear Safety Case would influence a CE&I engineering design and the necessary steps required to be taken by designers to fulfil the requirements of the Safety Case, during the design phase.
  • Knowledge of Human Factors in Design and how human Factors influence engineering designs.
  • Experience of space management, cable routing and cable management.

  • Experience in the design of Safety Systems (SMs, SRE’s (SFL term this as SRIs), SIL1/SIL2 Safety Systems).
  • Experience in the design of Machinery Control Systems, including Machinery Safety (BS13849 - Safety of Machinery Regs).
  • Experience in the delivery of designs in accordance with BS 61508.
  • Experience in the delivery of designs in accordance with DSEAR.
  • Ability to attain SC Security Clearance status.
  • Experience in the delivery of the CDM Duty Holder role of Principal Designer

The role requires attendance at 38.75 hrs/week, including a paid lunch break, and attracts a WEC Band 4A Salary (Range from Entry (£56,145) to Fully Competent (£61,372), company pension, personal bonus of up to 10% of pensionable salary, and annualised hours payment equivalent to 50hrs at 1.25x hourly rate, and 33 days annual leave including bank holidays.
