The Senior Product Development Engineer will be responsible for new product development (NPD) projects and category maintenance, while working within a cross-functional team. Role will also lead research and roadmap for long term technical solutions. Some travel, both domestic and international, will be required. This position will: 

  • Lead the engineering efforts on NPD projects from conception through production launch, while following Newell Brands Product Development Process
  • Ensure the product meets or exceeds expectations from a cost, timing, and specification standpoint
  • Incorporates an intermediate understanding of product specifications, material selection, manufacturing processes, cost constraints, and regulatory and legal landscape (intellectual property) to drive high quality, sustainable, and efficient new product development.
  • Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Brand, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Sourcing, Compliance, and Supply Chain

Project Execution

  • Maintains NPD design files, critical project information, and communicates information to internal and external contacts. Responds to internal requests for information regarding design files and documentation.
  • Manages and validates the process for Prototype Samples, Testing and Verification, and Production Approval. Is responsible for collaboration with International Engineers & Vendors for sample procurement, testing, and issues.
  • Supports product documentation including: New Product Setup Request, Design Drawings, Engineering Changes to B.O.M., Product Specification development and maintenance, and technical literature.
  • Works closely with international Project Engineer to manage activities at international vendors.
  • Understand existing technologies used in industry.
  • Fundamental understanding of ideation techniques.
  • Basic understanding of the importance of intellectual property for an organization.
  • Provides competitive benchmarking and consumer ratings/reviews to the development team to determine new product requirements.

Quality

  • Ability to lead DFMEA and/or PFMEA and distinguish between program, safety, business, regulatory, and consumer satisfaction risk.
  • Work directly with global quality team to identify quality issues and solutions.
  • Create DVP&R to identity, test, and mitigate risks
  • Design products that meet the critical to quality metrics (CTQs) developed by the Brand team

Product Performance

  • Uses a disciplined approach and the appropriate methodology to analyze and determine the preferred solution to technical challenges.
  • Ability to assist in writing technical specifications for the development and implementation of new products.
  • Ability to create test methods from identified risks in the DFMEA.
  • Defines non-technical deliverables that contribute to successful product releases.

Manufacturing

  • Intermediate understanding of manufacturing equipment used on our products.
  • Intermediate understanding of major tools and techniques used in manufacturing process.
  • Basic understand about how to select a supplier

Materials

  • Intermediate understanding of the materials used in our products.
  • Basic understanding of how to identify types of materials used in manufacturing
  • Ability to understand the functional and aesthetic requirements of product design

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field is required
  • 5-7 years of product development experience required
  • 2 years of knowledge in textile materials and cut and sew operations preferred
  • Experience in plastic design and tolerances preferred
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD i.e. SolidWorks
  • Experience with selection of materials and tradeoffs
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of problem-solving techniques and methodologies
  • Creative problem-solving ability while showing commitment to quality and deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of domestic and sourced manufacturing processes
