Reporter, Newsletter

Nexstar Media

The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is hiring an experienced reporter to grow the scale and impact of its Evening Report newsletter.

The reporter should have a proven track record of scoops and original reporting, and the ability to write on a broad set of topics out of Washington, D.C., including Congress, the White House, elections, legal affairs and big international stories.

We’re looking for a non-partisan reporter who can help put headlines in context and explain how lawmakers’ decisions practically affect our readers — anyone interested in politics and policy. You should be passionate about storytelling and crafting sharp copy that people want to read.

Here are some examples of various styles we’ve used to engage our audience: https://thehill.com/newsletters/morning-report/ https://thehill.com/newsletters/1230-report/ https://thehill.com/newsletters/evening-report/

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Deliver original reporting focused on politics and policy, helping The Hill stand out from competition.
  • Spot trends and analyze not only what politicians and other public figures are doing, but also what they are thinking.
  • Demonstrate a robust and broad news beacon at the helm of a marquee newsletter, sharing the newsroom’s best journalism.
  • Find interesting ways to tell the big stories of the day, catching readers up on the essentials while giving them something they won’t find anywhere else.
  • Communicate story ideas with editors and pitch both daily and long-term feature ideas for the newsletter.
  • Show strong news judgment in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to pivot quickly as news breaks.
  • Write clean, concise copy geared toward a well-informed audience while also showing an ability to distill complicated topics for readers.
  • Receive contributions from other journalists on staff, conduct occasional Q-and-As with reporters and outside experts, and be receptive to feedback from editors.
  • Contribute fresh ideas on how to grow and build the newsletter, including how it can stand out from other newsletters both from within the organization and from other outlets.

Candidates should have these skills and qualifications:

  • At least five years of experience in journalism
  • Demonstrated strong writing and reporting skills
  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills
  • Highly resourceful team player who works well within a broader newsroom
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or related newsroom experience

Compensation ranges from $65,000-$75,000 + commensurate with experience and skill level.

Benefits include medical, dental, vision, Life Insurance, and 401K with company match.

TO APPLY:

Please upload your materials combined into a single document with as much of the following as possible: your updated resume, a brief cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position, and your portfolio/clips or links to a few samples of your work.
