The Subject Matter Expert Sr. Mechanical Engineer will drive strategic direction in the design and construction of complex and mission critical data centers. The position will define mechanical systems design requirements for multiple, simultaneous data center projects from inception through completion and will provide expertise to the core CFED team as well as across all NTT organizations including CFOPs and Sales Engineering.

What you'll be doing

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as the Organizational Representative Lead on the critical mechanical infrastructure for the Data Center Facility Operations team.
  • Collaborate closely with A/E partners and other consultants on mechanical infrastructure for new and improvement projects.
  • Provide engineering guidance for sales opportunities and customer projects.
  • Troubleshoot problems and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action (CA) for problems affecting system performance and efficiency.
  • Review critical equipment installation, upgrade, maintenance, repair, and overhaul procedures.
  • Suggests system re-design where appropriate for system upgrades or design refinement.
  • Work hand in hand with the CFED team to maintain NTT Standards.
  • Provides incident management and system operational guidance, engineering policies and procedures, maintenance, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Serve in a project leadership role for mechanical system upgrades and improvements.
  • Continuously evaluates and improves mechanical system efficiency. Identify new technologies that may drive toward efficiency and quality.
  • Work with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Participate in factory witness testing of new equipment.
  • Guide engineers and commissioning agents to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical and building systems.
  • Provide expert advice in identifying equipment end-of-life and obsolescence for capital project budgeting.
  • Provide expert guidance on the performance of engineering calculations and studies.
  • Monitor and evaluate system capacity and failover loading.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of mechanical equipment.
  • Conduct product, systems, and material research.
  • Identify potential business opportunities to increase revenue.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Proven track record of profitable and successful projects.
  • In depth knowledge of industrial mechanical equipment and operation including Large Centrifugal Chillers, Cooling Towers, Heat Exchangers, Pumps, Water Treatment Systems, HVAC equipment, Computer Room AC Units (CRACs), Operating Building Management and Industrial PLC Control Systems, Air handling equipment, Valves, Piping, Ductwork, Storm and sanitary drains, industrial and domestic water.
  • High level of competence and familiarity with energy calculations.
  • Adept and practiced at fluid flow and heat transfer calculations including approach temperature, small temperature difference, sensible load, latent load, NPSH, pump and fan affinity laws, pressure loss, fan and pump heat, kW/Ton, EER, IPLV, and the like.
  • Ability to perform psychrometric calculations and develop system state points and processes including use of wet bulb temperature, dewpoint temperature, dry bulb temperature, and enthalpy.
  • Familiar with control methods and hardware including signal types, data communication protocols for Building Automation and Control networks, actuator types, failure modes, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and control tuning methods.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, standards and regulations including California Title 24, ASHRAE, IECC, ASME, Life Safety, IBC, NFPA and OSHA.
  • Experience with system sequence(s) of operation for complex systems with multiple functions.
  • Operating engineering experience with large mechanical systems including BMS trending, off-normal operation, and transient analysis.
  • Skilled to supervise and train a group of other engineers and technical professionals.
  • Strong team player with good interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Outlook, MS Project, Bluebeam.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work efficiently, with good team orientation.
  • Ability to work in process-driven, high criticality environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate computing skills that show complex data trending/tracking and analysis.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field required.
  • Professional Engineering certification required.
  • Ten or more years of experience as outlined above, preferably in a data center environment or critical environment (hospital, power plant, etc.).
  • Experience with large scale technical operations.
  • Experience with vendor negotiation and management.
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
  • Familiarity and competence regarding ASHRAE TC 9.9 publications including PUE, ASHRAE Recommended Temperature and Humidity Limits, Data Center Controls, Containment, etc. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily sitting with some walking, standing, and bending.
  • Able to hear and speak into a telephone.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Office environment with extensive daily usage of a computer.
  • Field work in mechanical and electrical infrastructure rooms, data floor spaces, outdoor and roof mounted equipment.
  • Data center environment with loud noises and changing temperatures. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel required up to 25% of the time.
  • Must possess a current, valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Carry a cell phone to be available in emergency situations.
  • Ability and willingness to respond after hours in the event of an emergency, and at times during extended hours.

This is a remote position that requires reliable internet connection and electricity. A monthly stipend is provided to cover expenses associated with working remotely and use of a personal mobile device, if applicable.

NTT Global Data Centers Americas, Inc. offers competitive compensation based on experience, education, and location. Base salary for this position is $122,000 - $184,000.

All regular full-time employees are eligible for an annual bonus; payout is dependent upon individual and company performance.
