The Xiaofeng Allen Su laboratory at the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR), is seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Fellow with strong interests in cancer research to join a dynamic team science project. This opportunity is under the Project for Military Exposure and Toxin History Evaluation in US Service Members (PROMETHEUS), which is a Cancer Moonshot 2.0 project of the Department of Defense’s Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP). This research led by CPDR investigators focuses on identifying the combination of inheritable markers and environmental exposures influences prostate cancer development. In addition, the project aims to understand the fundamental mechanism of inheritable markers and environmental agents/toxins in impacting prostate cancer progression.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team consisting of scientific and clinical investigators. Candidates should have interests in molecular and cell biology and cancer genomics. Incumbent exercises technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Performs analysis and interpretation of results. Conduct scientific writings including research papers, funding applications and protocols. 

About CPDR:

CPDR is an interdisciplinary translational prostate cancer research program of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Department of Surgery and the John P. Murtha Cancer Center Research Program at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Established in 1992 (Public Law 102-172), CPDR's mission is fulfilled primarily through its three principal programs: (1) the Clinical Translational Research Center; (2) the Basic Science Research Program, and (3) the Multicenter National Prostate Cancer Database to encompass its clinical research work with participating military medical centers.

This position will be in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) and the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) located at the Rockledge Offices in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to the MCCRP and CPDR.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, plans, conducts, and completes investigations under supervision. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Performs data entry in accurate, timely, and efficient manner. Maintains clear and accurate data collection records and inventories in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  • Maintains supplies in the laboratory and ensures proper cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  • Creates, collects, disseminates, and maintains appropriate study data.
  • Conducts with the writing and editing of experimental results for publication in technical and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Presents scientific progress in professional seminars and conferences.
  • Maintains records and documentation regarding assigned research. Performs routine data analysis and verifies and corrects data entry.
  • Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and strong interests in genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics and computational biology, sequencing, large data analysis. Background of DNA damage repair, environment exposure, mutation analysis is preferred but not required.
  • Motivation to lead team research projects under Principal Investigator’s supervision.
  • Interests in working on large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, or proteomic studies to explore cancer related pathways.
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting. 

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree 
  • Minimum of 0-5 years’ experience required.
