Change people’s lives and love what you do! Cochlear develops world-leading medical devices that help people hear. As a top 100 medical device company and market-leader in implantable hearing devices, more people choose a Cochlear-branded cochlear implant system than any other. Our employees tell us that the number one reason they enjoy working for Cochlear is the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives.

You will join a global team of skilled and passionate audio digital signal processing (DSP) engineers. We work on bringing our innovative algorithms into our next generation of implantable hearing devices, to enable our customers to hear better in real-life situations.

In your role, you will:

  • Develop innovative audio signal processing algorithms for hearing devices such as beamforming, noise reduction, feedback cancellation, automatic gain control, etc. This involves design, implementation, integration, verification, and documentation activities.
  • Perform modeling and prototyping of signal processing algorithms using Python or Matlab/Simulink and assess audio performance and algorithm parametrization.
  • Implement real-time signal processing algorithms on the hearing device multi-core DSP platform using C and/or assembly.
  • Develop PC drivers for configuring audio processing algorithms using Python and/or C#.
  • Support product verification via design and implementation of automated tests.
  • Create intellectual property and support the IP process.
  • Collaborate with our product development and research teams in Belgium, Australia, and Sweden on prototyping and tuning algorithms for product commercialisation.
  • Regularly work from our Mechelen office to facilitate teamwork and use of equipment, with the possibility of working from home for up to 40% of the time.

You will bring:

  • M.Sc. degree in audio engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or other field related to signal processing.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in DSP algorithm development, ideally for audio/speech applications, from industry, PhD/postdoc, or other experience.
  • Solid understanding of signal analysis and processing techniques including FIR/IIR filters, adaptive filters such as NLMS, FFT transforms, active noise cancellation, spatial filtering, etc.
  • Skilled at signal analysis and algorithm development using a high-level programming language proficiently, preferably Python, but also Matlab, Julia, or similar.
  • Experience with porting signal processing algorithms into efficient fixed-point implementations on embedded systems (microcontroller or DSP) using C/C++ or assembly.
  • Strong cross-functional thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

It would be highly desirable if you have:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in the fields of audio/speech signal processing, statistical signal processing, or control theory.
  • Experience with electroacoustics and audio equipment (microphone, speaker, sound card, spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope).
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of psychoacoustics principles.
  • Experience with IP generation.

The team uses the Scrum agile frameworks for developing/delivering our products and we use the Atlassian tools suite including Jira and Confluence. We encourage our engineers to closely collaborate in order to build better solutions and ensure that knowledge is shared within the team.
