Position Overview

The Managing Editor leads, schedules, manages and supervises the news team at KIRO Newsradio, the leading news radio station in Seattle, ensuring top-quality news coverage and team excellence.

The Managing Editor operates under the supervision of the News Director and is focused on implementing tactical aspects of the newsroom’s strategy. Along with the News Director, the Managing Editor champions the editorial vision of the station, making decisions on content selection, storytelling approach, and journalistic integrity, upholding the highest standards of accuracy and ethics. The Managing Editor serves as a key coordinator between the news team and other departments, including digital and marketing teams, to promote a unified and dynamic approach to news production and dissemination across diverse platforms.

Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.

  • This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Seattle site.

What You Will Do:

Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise news team including recruitment, training, scheduling, assignments, coaching, goal-setting and performance feedback.
  • Act as an operational leader in the newsroom, aligning day-to-day activities with the strategic direction set by the News Director.
  • Drive decision-making processes regarding editorial direction, content selection, and resource allocation, fostering a collaborative and creative newsroom culture.
  • Oversee the development and execution of compelling content, ensuring it is adaptable and optimized for various platforms including terrestrial radio, streaming services, social networks, and video.
  • Place a heightened emphasis on video content, understanding its growing importance and integrating video journalism effectively into the digital growth strategy.
  • Encourage innovative storytelling techniques and the use of multimedia, including video, to enhance audience engagement and reach across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with the MyNorthwest editorial team and audience development to enhance the station's online presence, focusing on digital trends and audience preferences to drive content strategy.
  • Manage the news team's performance, including regular feedback, appraisals, and identifying professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure comprehensive coverage of local, national, and international news, managing the swift response to breaking news situations.
  • Emphasize the integration of digital media strategies, particularly video, to enhance audience engagement and adapt to changing media consumption habits.
  • Promote a multi-platform journalism environment, advocating for proficiency in various formats such as audio, video, online content, and social media storytelling.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and technological advancements to maintain KIRO Newsradio's position as a forward-thinking news organization.
  • Represent KIRO Newsradio in community and industry events, enhancing the station's profile and engagement.
  • Engage actively with audiences and stakeholders to gather feedback, using insights to continually refine and improve news coverage and presentation.

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:

  • Proven writing and editorial skills
  • Able to work independently and use discretionary news judgment
  • Proven experience in managing a newsroom or similar editorial environment, with a strong grasp of broadcast and digital news production.
  • Ability to understand and actively promote digital growth, recognizing its critical role in the evolving media landscape and leading efforts to expand our digital footprint
  • A deep understanding of the evolving media landscape, especially the role of video in digital growth and the dynamics of content distribution across various platforms.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with a history of nurturing high-performing teams with the ability to react quickly and positively under a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated excellence and a strong track record in radio news, with a commitment to maintaining and enhancing its quality and impact, preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to provide coaching and feedback, preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

Compensation Range

$70,000- $120,000 This range spans multiple levels of this role.

Salary rate will be determined by an evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal and external benchmarks.
