Department Overview

The Associate VP of the Center for Learner Diversity and Inclusion (CLDI) leads the Center in its mission to:

  • To build a richly diverse and open-minded student community within a culture focused on belonging, welcome, and support; 
  • To promote diverse intellectual and philosophical ideas toward the provision of culturally competent education, discovery, and patient care 
  • To collaborate institution wide to achieve a comprehensive strategic plan for diversity, outreach, and anti-racism that supports OHSUs mission to be a place diverse in people and ideas and where diverse peoples are attracted to work, study, and stay here. 
  • To bring forth the CLDI vision of advocacy for a university community of care and belonging that supports students rich in diversity and background toward academic and personal success at OHSU and beyond.

In this role, the Associate VP advances the university’s goals for students toward diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by leading the team of the Center and serving on the Student Affairs Leadership Team.

The Associate VP facilitates change in OHSU systems, structures, and culture to promote a student experience centered on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

The Associate VP is responsible for managing CLDI and its staff, developing programs and events that support equity and inclusion, facilitating partnerships that ensure diverse recruitment and retention practices for incoming students, developing training and educational strategies that lead to student success at OHSU, and providing university leadership in the area of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in collaboration with OHSU leaders and groups. The responsibilities of this position also include the operational, fiscal and personnel management CLDI, specifically i) day to day financial management of the Center; (ii) day to day management of employees, including scheduling of work, applicable HR activities and issue/conflict resolution; (iii) formulation of strategic direction for the Center, and (iv) setting of priorities and conducting budget generation and reconciliation activities.

Function/Duties of Position

Create effective programs, services, and outreach to improve the university’s efforts towards recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students, especially for underrepresented students.

  • Responsible for oversight of assigned programs, services, initiatives and metrics designed to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging which include recruitment and retention of under-represented groups.
  • Contribute to planning and actions that enable Admissions committees to recruit effectively for underrepresented populations.
  • Provide leadership and support towards the university’s goals for diversity and enrollment.
  • Create effective programs, services, and outreach to improve student success metrics for underrepresented and diverse students
  • Working with other internal stakeholders, identify retention issues, trends, and themes for diverse students.
  • Develop strategies to address concerns in collaboration with all OHSU service networks and others in this effort. 
  • Collaborate with academic staff and committees (Provost, Deans, Gender Equity in Academic Health and Medicine, Faculty Development, Diversity House Officers, etc.) in efforts to attract, recruit, and retain diverse students.
  • Develop and lead student-related DEIB communications strategy that creates engaging diversity-related content to share across channels with internal and external audience.

Lead and manage the Center for Learner Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) office, space, and staff.

  • Develop and maintain mission and vision for CLDI team
  • Train, supervise, and develop the CLDI team
  • Oversee the CLDI departmental budget development and management

Serve as the university-wide leader in the development and implementation of DEIB programs, services, policies, training, and advocacy for students.

  • Provide leadership for the development and delivery of DEIB training for students and for faculty and staff that support or
  • teach them. 
  • Provide guidance, consultation, and support to key OHSU partners in DEIB work, especially in the schools and programs.
  • Lead the team in providing robust and frequent culturally inclusive events and programs that support a sense of belonging and reflect the diversity of our world.

Develop a comprehensive assessment plan for the Center and for the student population through a university climate survey.

  • Responsible for monitoring and evaluating programmatic and operational effectiveness and identifying changes required for improvement
  • Develop and present an annual CLDI report

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, leadership, education, or a related discipline

Experience:

  • 8-10 years poster master’s progressive management/leadership experience in a role directly related to diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, and civil rights compliance.
  • Experience working/leading in a higher education setting post degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctorate in education, leadership, student affairs, or a related discipline

Experience:

  • 10 years poster higher degree with progressive management/leadership experience in a role directly related to diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, and civil rights compliance.
