Mechanical Engineering Research Scientist

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Mechanical Engineering Research Scientist to join the team.

As a Career Research Scientist you will be expected to manage and lead the development of next-generation laser-ablation based processing and spectroscopy tools. The position requires novel, innovative, and detailed experimental research in diverse femtosecond laser technologies that will address new challenges in laser-matter interactions. The Research Scientist is expected to apply cutting-edge engineering and scientific concepts in the development of laser machining and imaging/analysis techniques. The successful candidate is also expected to develop new expertise and obtain recognition within the laser ablation processing and spectroscopy research community. The position has visibility and impact outside Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), via conference presentations and interactions with funding sponsors and program managers. The position is for a key hands-on researcher and critical to maintaining LBNL’s ability to execute innovative research in these fields and in program direction.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead innovative research in the field of pulsed laser-ablation based processing and diagnostics.
  • Develop and advance research studies that unveil the fundamental mechanisms of laser matter interactions as they relate to the development of processing techniques and optical spectroscopies.
  • Advance laser technologies for energy-related and nuclear security applications.
  • Carry out complex work plans for multiple tasks, lead data collection and analysis efforts, use findings to improve system performance, and suggest follow-on work. Develop resolution to complex technical problems.
  • Design experiments and modify or combine laser, detectors, and optical spectrometer components as needed.
  • Apply computer analysis and simulation programs to interpret experimental data and characterize material surfaces.
  • Collaborate with external personnel outside of the Lab, including funding agencies and other researchers in their respective fields.
  • Provide technical support, training and mentoring to students and postdocs.
  • Contribute to proposal and manuscript writing, speaking at scientific meetings and program reviews.
  • Adhere with LBNL and EH&S safety guidelines and requirements.

What Is Required:

  • Advanced degree in experimental Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related professional experience beyond highest customary degree.
  • Experience in optics, experimental system design, and automation
  • Extensive experience with pulsed laser material interactions, preferably in the ultrafast laser regime.
  • Experience with various morphological and chemical characterization techniques. Familiarity with diagnostic data interpretation and correlation.
  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in the field of laser processing and related advanced diagnostics
  • Sample preparation and comprehensive laser ablation surface modification characterization.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing and presenting.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in experimental Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Five years of relevant professional experience beyond highest customary degree.
  • Pump-probe experimentation
  • Knowledge in machine learning.
