The Role:

Our Medical Affairs organization advances public health by engaging in scientific dialogue with national and state level immunization technical advisory groups and other relevant institutions, health care authorities and regulators to ensure the scientific value of Moderna’s licensed vaccines and candidate therapies is fully realized, understand further unmet medical needs and foster collaboration to further differentiate our portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics.

This role is an exciting opportunity to be a part of Moderna’s growth in South Korea and is an integral member of the South Korea and Asia Pacific Medical Affairs leadership teams. Reporting to the VP Medical Affairs, Asia Pacific, the Medical Director will be accountable for the proactive and continuous assessment of the dynamics of the external and internal environment, informing and delivering strategic medical plans to support Moderna’s portfolio in country.

The South Korea Medical Director will be responsible for the development and execution of the Medical Affairs activities for Moderna’s products, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the medical strategy, supporting data generation activities and interacting with key healthcare professionals. (S)he will represent local opportunities, requirements and needs at the regional and/or headquarter level, as appropriate. The role represents Moderna in external activities and ensures effective interactions with key scientific leaders, public health experts, medical associations, health care authorities and the media. To this end, (s)he will coordinate these efforts with the local General Manager and team, and the VP Medical Affairs Asia Pacific and the AP regional team.

The Medical Director will partner and work closely with cross functional counterparts and external and internal stakeholders across Moderna, including global and regional Medical Affairs colleagues, Integrated Evidence Generation, Pharmacovigilance, Regulatory, Commercial, R&D and Communication.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the operational delivery of Medical Affairs activities and KOL engagement and external customers
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership within the market for our current vaccine and future vaccination programs
  • Develop and foster relationships with external stakeholders to ensure that robust insights from healthcare practitioners and patients are gathered into local and regional plans and tactics
  • Facilitate the generation of data that are needed by payers, physicians and patients to properly understand and value our innovative medicines and vaccines
  • Gain and communicate customer insights on questions. Support cross-functional gleaning of customer insights, sharing that information across relevant teams, including, Pharmacovigilance, Medical Affairs, Marketing, Market Access, Regulatory, Public Health Policy, Government Relations, etc.
  • Drive insights gathering activities for South Korea (e.g. advisory boards, expert meetings) to meet the company needs around the clinical development and implementation of innovation in the field of vaccination.
  • Enhance Moderna’s reputation and profile through a clear external focus, representing the company in industry associations and as a media spokesperson.
  • Provide clear understanding of how the health care system, national immunization plans and guidelines may need to change to introduce and maintain innovations around vaccination.
  • Partner with the regional Medical Affairs team to help develop medical affairs strategies for assigned products.
  • Partner with the local commercial organization to ensure the full alignment of market Medical Affairs strategies with commercial strategies.
  • Identify opportunities at market level for innovative research concepts for data generation that support the benefit/risk profile of Moderna’s vaccinations.
  • Ensure that medical information requests (MIRs) from healthcare professionals are addressed and aligned
  • Drive medical affairs activities and generation and dissemination of data supporting overall product scientific and business strategy.
  • Stay informed on professional information and technology through conferences and/or medical literature and acts as a therapeutic area resource to the local team
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable corporate policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the development of scientifically accurate marketing materials, medical education programs, advisories, and symposia.
  • Provide guidance to cross-functional team members to aid in the development of promotional materials. Provides timely and accurate reviews of promotional strategies and tactics in accordance with established policies and practice standards, including regulatory guidelines to meet customer needs.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Expertise in life or health sciences (e.g. MD, Ph.D., PharmD, pharmacist) with solid medical/technical background and proven competencies influencing skills, clinical research insight, business and market knowledge.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in pharmaceutical industry in Medical Affairs with demonstrated successful track record, preferably in vaccines
  • Strong prioritization and decision-making skills and ability to understand how decisions in Medical Affairs fit into the broader context of company strategies.
  • Proven expertise at engaging scientific leaders and other key stakeholders (e.g. health care authorities, payors, medical and scientific organizations), preferably in the field of Vaccines.
  • Ability to work independently and lead and collaborate in cross-functional teams in a matrix environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to influence laterally.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of local regulatory and compliance requirements.
