Research Scientist in Naval Engineering, Mechanical Design and Simulations of Offshore Equipment – Kraków, Poland

For our research center in Krakow/Poland, we are looking for a Researcher with expertise in mechanical design and simulations focusing on offshore, floating, and subsea applications. You will join a dynamic, motivated, and creative team with a broad range of experience and competencies. As part of our team, you will combine theory with practice, creating, testing, and validating new technologies to enable the energy transition.

The research area in which you will work is the mechanical design and analysis of offshore, floating, and subsea power system devices. That primarily includes static mechanics, dynamic mechanics, fatigue, and vibration analysis, but also additional phenomena like heat transfer, non-linear materials, and electromagnetic forces. As a market leader accelerating the evolution of the world’s energy system, we put substantial effort into research and development to constantly increase the quality and reliability of our products. You will be able to contribute to this development and create cutting-edge solutions.

Your Responsibilities

  • Propose, contribute to, and lead research and development projects for numerical simulations of products for energy systems in offshore and subsea applications.
  • Provide results for static, dynamic, and fatigue simulations. Formulate clear conclusions and practical recommendations for the business. Report your work and findings in project documentation.
  • Collaborate with global teams of researchers and engineers at Hitachi Energy to identify, analyze, and solve real-world challenges in optimizing mechanical designs for next-generation products.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the latest numerical analysis technologies, algorithms, and software packages. Recognize opportunities for their practical application in industrial conditions.
  • Actively promote your knowledge within the company and outside.
  • Disseminate your results in technical reports, scientific publications, research conferences, and patent applications.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Mechanics, Material Engineering, Naval Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical design, static and dynamic analysis, material strength, and a basic understanding of typical manufacturing technologies.
  • Working experience (2+ years) with CAD/CAE modeling and FEM analysis. Knowledge of the commercial tools (e.g., Ansys, ABAQUS, LS/Dyna, COMSOL, CREO, …)
  • Understanding of FE algorithms, including linear and non-linear static, implicit and explicit dynamics (large deformation, short-circuit forces, seismic analysis, fluid-structure interaction), vibration (modal analysis, vibroacoustic, damping, …), fatigue, and fracture mechanics.
  • Ability to model various material types: metals, thermoplastics and thermosets, fiber composites, elastomers and rubbers, liquids and gasses.
  • Willingness to take an interdisciplinary approach and learn new knowledge when working with experts from different domains.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

In addition, the following skills would be beneficial for the role:

  • Ability to write simple codes and user subroutines in CAD/CAE software packages.
  • Knowledge about power network business, green energy, respective requirements, and industry standards.

We encourage you to apply for this position. You will work with a team of scientists to develop new products and technologies for Hitachi Energy. Every day, we search for next-generation solutions and work on their implementation to make energy distribution and transmission more sustainable, flexible, and secure. With our work, we want to contribute to solving global inequalities and climate change challenges.

Our people have different educational backgrounds, come from various countries, and have different ages and experiences. We value creativity and support self-development and knowledge sharing.
