Essential Duties

1. Manages relationships with external media sources. Pursues media coverage creatively and aggressively. Responds to inquiries from national and international news media, student media, the University community and the general public. 2. Enhances the overall quality of media relations for key stakeholders by preparing them for media interviews. Manages relationships with key campus stakeholders with a high degree of professionalism, judgment and understanding of stakeholder goals. 3. Creates compelling story ideas and narratives; produces content for both external and internal channels; writes copy and social media posts and manages content. 4. Plans social media strategies for key University communications and programs. Monitors University social media assets for negative comments or misinformation. 5. Supports short- and long-term communication planning with insights into audiences, channels and culture; coordinates with other communications professionals to achieve institutional goals; leads the communications process within developed standards and protocols. 6. Supports effective response strategies, often in crisis situations requiring 24/7 attention and intense media/public scrutiny, and articulates the University’s position via personal interviews or written responses. 7. Produces multimedia content and manages the work of graphic and web designers, student interns, printers, video producers and photographers. 8. Manages communication plans for all stakeholders by understanding the significance of campus initiatives and/or academic work; creates compelling stories and messages to translate the significance through language that is clear and accessible for public awareness. 9. Develops and maintains regular contact with media representatives in multiple disciplines. 10. Maintains the Yale brand and graphic identity standards; supports and maintains standard operating procedures; contributes to digital asset management. 11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of experience in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography or video.

Position Focus:

Reporting to both the Deputy Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Associate Dean for Communications, this position develops, coordinates and implements a dynamic communications strategy for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and supports other organizations at the medical school that promote inclusion and equity for women and those under-represented in medicine and science. This position will be responsible for developing and writing a variety of communications for both external and internal audiences to enhance Yale School of Medicine’s visibility and reputation; foster positive faculty, staff, and trainee relations; support the implementation of the YSM Diversity Strategic Plan; and actively promote the scientific and scholarly success of women students, trainees, and faculty, and those from underrepresented groups.

Collaborates with faculty, staff and administrators to develop and manage forward-looking strategic communications to enhance the school’s reputation around diversity, equity and inclusion and communicate its messages. Creates compelling story ideas and narratives; writes/produces content for both external and internal channels; conceptualizes and writes creative posts across all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other accounts. Works with the deputy dean on communications and presentations for internal and external audiences. Produces DEI quarterly newsletter and annual report; provides support for additional reports (e.g. GME DEI) as required. Provides communications and outreach support for faculty and trainee recruitment, such as Fellowship and Residency Second Look, recruitment fairs, and job announcements. Works collaboratively on such projects as the Annual Women in Medicine Conference and other initiatives designed to enhance the experience of women and those under-represented in medicine at YSM. Uses the School of Medicine’s web publishing systems to publish and update the sites, including events, news and general information; evaluates web pages for accuracy and best practices to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); leverages improvements available through the school’s web publishing systems. Evaluates analytics to make evidence-based decisions regarding content and website planning. Collaborates with YSM Office of Communications to ensure accuracy and a consistent look and tone for all communications, including consistency with appropriate style guides and branding and other developed publishing standards and protocols. Supports short and long-term communication planning with insights into audiences, channels and culture. Works with the Office of Public Affairs & Communications to pursue media coverage and to manage relationships with external media sources. Responds to inquiries from national and international news media, student media, the University community and the general public. Coordinates with other communications professionals to achieve institutional goals.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience developing, disseminating and maintaining web content and social media in a medical/academic setting and writing about diversity and inclusion. Prior experience in a communications-related job.
