GRAIL is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help us evolve our data platform and support the growing data needs of GRAIL’s clinical and research activities.

This a hybrid (on/off-site) role located in our Menlo Park, CA HQ. Due to the hybrid requirement at this point we are looking for exceptional software engineers who are located within driving distance of Menlo Park.

As a key member of our Backend Software team and you will have the opportunity to advance GRAIL's pioneering applications and make a profound difference in the lives of those affected by cancer!

Responsibilities

  • Be a part of a highly collaborative team that focuses on delivering value to cross-functional partners by providing secure access to data.
  • Drive the design, deployment, and delivery of data infrastructure, standardized clinical data models, datasets, and tools.
  • Collaborate with other Software teams and work cross-functionally with Research, Clinical Data Management, and Medical Affairs to deliver end-to-end data solutions. 
  • Ensure that the delivered software systems and datasets adhere to software quality, clinical compliance, data sequestration, and privacy standards.
  • Provide mentorship to other engineers on software engineering and data engineering best practices.

Required Skills

  • B.S. / M.S. in a quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology) with at least 8 years of related industry experience, or Ph.D. with at least 5 years of related industry experience.
  • Extensive experience in developing data pipelines using scalable cloud-based data warehouses / data lakes on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Extensive experience with relational databases, data modeling principles, data pipeline tools and workflow engines, e.g. DBT, Apache Airflow, AWS GLUE, Spark.
  • Significant experience with DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployment/Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code/Terraform.
  • Substantial experience working with clinical study data, healthcare data, Real-World Evidence.
  • Substantial experience with object-oriented and/or functional programming. 
  • Ability to embrace uncertainty, navigate ambiguity, and collaborate with product teams and stakeholders to refine requirements and drive towards clear engineering objectives and designs.
  • Openness to giving and receiving critical feedback in a constructive manner.

Desired Skills

  • Prior industry experience at a healthcare / biotech / life sciences company.
  • Familiarity with Software as a Medical Device and experience working in a regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with Golang, Python, and R.
  • Familiarity with Clinical Data Model standards (e.g. OMOP, CDISC) and Healthcare Data standards (e.g. FHIR, HL7 v2).
  • Experience building microservices and web applications.
  • Experience with supporting data science / machine learning data pipelines.

The estimated, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $180,000 - $210,000. Actual base pay will consider skills, experience, and location.

Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.
