MDOT Veteran Intern (Laborer/Maintenance) - Coldwater Welcome Center

Job Description

This is a contracted appointment that may last up to two years in duration. Paid internships occur throughout the State of Michigan.

This position will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderly appearance of the Coldwater Welcome Center. Duties may include:

  • cleaning restrooms and all areas to include rubbish, trash inside and outside the facility
  • sweeping the parking lot, curbs, and walkways 
  • performing grounds keeping duties, such as planting and maintaining flower beds and landscaping
  • assisting in making minor repairs to the building to include fixtures, building systems, and painting surfaces of less than major proportions
  • operating small machinery and using related hand tools and equipment
  • operating a push mower, tractor mower, vacuum sweeper, floor scrubber, power washer
  • assisting in winter activities, as needed, such as assisting in plowing snow on sidewalks and parking areas

Required Education and Experience

Preferred Education: 

Education typically acquired through completion of high school.

Preferred Experience:

Laborer 5 - No specific type or amount is required. 

Laborer E6 - One year of experience performing duties involving the use of hand tools and motorized machinery equivalent to a Laborer 5.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a valid driver's license is required. 

Must be an honorably discharged veteran.

To be considered for this position you must: 

  • Attach a copy of your DD-214 to your application. This document will be required in order to serve in this internship program.

All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test and physical (if applicable) prior to their actual appointment. Criminal and driving records will also be checked if applicable. Any position offer will be conditional until results of the drug test, physical, criminal background, and driving records indicate eligibility for employment.
