This recruitment will be used to fill six to eight (6-8) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and up to 40 hours per week during term breaks) Student Technical Assistant (Student Logging Training Program, (SLTP) Intern) positions for the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (OSU).
These positions support OSU Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management (FERM) Department and OSU Research Forests (OSURF) management activities, associated with the Student Logging Training Program and related FERM and OSURF projects. These positions will work with the SLTP Manager to accomplish operational, harvest, and general forest management related duties.
Position Duties
The hire will perform all phases of designing, analyzing, and safely implementing commercial thinning with the Koller K501 yarder and associated operational equipment (Link-Belt 3240 Log Loader, John Deere 648 Skidder).

This job is a great opportunity to be exposed to all phases of a logging operation while providing for application of skills learned in the classroom. The work program is designed as a logging training program for interested and qualified students. There may also be opportunities to assist with harvest operations projects and research outside of the student thinning operation.
The hire will be driving OSU Motor Pool, College, or University owned vehicles, and/or personal vehicles throughout the OSU Research Forests, both locally and statewide, to access work sites in the field. Students may be required to provide their own transportation to local work sites.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576056-0000 et seq.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
These positions are based at the Harvest Systems Lab at OSU Research Forests office complex at Peavy Arboretum; Incumbents are required to provide their own transportation to and from Peavy Arboretum.
These positions are required to work in a forested environment with steep slopes, uneven and brushy terrain, with exposure to biting and/or stinging insects and poison oak, and in all weather conditions (including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind).
The ability to lift/carry/push/pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required. The work schedule during academic terms will be flexible to accommodate student coursework. The ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) during summer breaks is preferred.
Successful applicants will be expected to make a one (1) year commitment (1 JAN 2024 to 31 DEC 2024). Expectation to work 12 – 20 hours per week during the school year (as class schedules permit) and full time during the 2024 summer.
DURATION:
Training (office & field) during Winter and Spring 2024 terms, hours TBD per week. Part time; 12 – 20 hours per week during the school year. Full time; summer field season (approx. mid-June – late Sept. 2024). Continuing through Fall Term 2024
COMPENSATION:
$15.00 per hour initial training wage; operational wage increases, commensurate with qualifications.
