The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. Through its integrated system of 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals - and expanded network of community partner clinics – DHS annually provides direct care for 600,000 unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual budget of over $6.9 billion.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Positions allocable to this class typically report to higher-level nurses or providers. Incumbents apply recognized nursing principles and practices in providing professional nursing care and/or services under close supervision in a variety of settings. Duties are performed in accordance with specific instructions, departmental policies and procedures and established general written standards of nursing care. Positions are responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care as part of an interdisciplinary team. Incumbents serve as professional role models and may provide direction to others. Nursing practice at this level demonstrates the application of basic assessment skills; independent judgment and action; and adherence to patient privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines.

This class provides professional nursing care and services to patients in a variety of settings.

Formulates nursing care plans upon assessment and in accordance with provider orders, procedures and/or protocols.

Modifies plans of patient care based on reassessment findings, specific patient care needs, and/or changes in interdisciplinary treatment plan.

Assists in discharge planning needs.

Implementation

Provides individualized and specialized nursing care and administers medications and treatments to patients as prescribed.

Observes patient's response to interventions and treatments and monitors for side effects of medication administration.

Recognizes and responds to changes in patient status timely and appropriately. Intervenes when situations call for immediate action.

Communicates identified needs and patient responses to members of the interdisciplinary team.

Observes, evaluates, and communicates the effects of treatments and interventions.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1. A license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing
  • AND-
  • 2. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program certification issued by the American Heart Association.

PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

License and Certification Information

  • To compete in this examination process, applicants must have a license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing -OR- have a license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by a State Government Board of Registered Nursing, within the United States of America.

Applicants who have a license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by a State Government Board of Registered Nursing, within the United States of America, may compete in this examination; however, the names of such candidates will be withheld from the certification list pending receipt of the required license authorized by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Please ensure the Certification and License Section of the application is completed. Provide the title(s) of your required license(s) and/or certification(s), the number(s), date(s) of issue, date(s) of expiration and the name(s) of the issuing agency for the required license(s) and certificate(s) as specified in the Selection Requirements.

The original license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing and BLS certification must be presented during the selection process and/or prior to appointment.

After filing an application online, candidates will receive a link via email to take an unproctored online multiple-choice work-style assessment (WSA).

Applications received by 2:00 PM, PT, will receive the link for the WSA the same day. Applications received after 2:00 PM, PT, or on Saturday or Sunday, will receive the link the next business day. It is suggested that you plan to submit your online application well in advance of the 2:00 PM, PT, deadline to receive the WSA link the same day.

Applicants who pass the WSA will be added to the eligible register. Applicants who fail the WSA will be allowed to retake it 30 days from their failed attempt.

Applicants must meet the Selection Requirements and pass the WSA with a score of 70% or higher to be added to the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility. 

Persons who pass the multiple-choice test may not compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months from the date they are added to the eligible register. If you have applied and did not meet the Requirements at the time of filing, or if you are not successful in passing the multiple-choice test, you may reapply 30 days from the date of your failed attempt. 

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION 

In accordance with TITLE 5 - PERSONNEL, APPENDIX 1 (Civil Service Rule 11.03) of the Los Angeles County Code, selective certification may be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training. The following areas may require selective certification.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%. The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) has reciprocal agreements with several public retirement systems in California.
