Internships/Graduates at Nijmegen Design Centre

Nexperia

Nexperia are a global semiconductor manufacturer with a highly skilled and diverse workforce of over 15,000 employees from over 50 countries worldwide. The Analog & Logic IC’s Business Group within Nexperia has three separate Product Groups focused in multiple product areas. Nexperia’ s Logic product group has been involved in shipping Standard Logic products to the market for over 50 years shipping more than 9 billion units in 2022, which is more than any other competitor within this market. From this significant market position, BG A&L is making new product investments in the Analog Signal Chain Market as well as the Power Management ICs market. Beyond a leading portfolio of Standard Logic devices, BG A&L is a range of products including next-generation Voltage Translators, Precision Analog Switches, Multiplexers, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Harvesting Devices and more.

What you will do

In the BG A&L family, we have diverse teams from engineering to support and management. They are working together to ensure that customers get the most out of our A&L products and for the company to reach the ambitious goal to be the leading IC company. As an internship/graduate student, you will be joining one of the teams in the department and working with multicultural colleagues. You will support on improving our technology and/or processes. This opportunity will give you chance to acquire professional experiences, researching and experimenting to discover new ideas together, and then to present your work to the team and/or other colleagues in the department.

See below the list of assignments we have available. Our internships generally start in January/February or September for a period of 5 to 6 months.

Assignment 1 - Automated sweep measurement tool - (for HBO/University Electrical Engineering Graduates)

In our validation work we often need to perform a measurement where we sweep one parameter (voltage/current) and measure several other parameters. It is a simple task but mistakes can be easily introduced when the values need to be read from the measurement equipment and written down by hand. An automated tool that can perform these kind of measurements would be very useful. The tool must be easy to use, configurable and be able to handle all kinds of lab equipment. Additionally, the tool must be expandable both in features and the amount of equipment it can control. A solid software architecture is essential to meet these requirements. In our group there are software building blocks available and for you the task to build it into a standalone tool that is ready to be used of.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn the advanced LabVIEW design methodologies
  • Write the software design specification
  • Build the tool
  • Write the user manual.

Skill required

  • Experience with the programming language LabVIEW is required
  • Be able to control lab equipment
  • Be able to perform measurements in the lab to test the software.

Assignment 2 - Passive Logic | Energy harvesting to reduce pin count for standard Logic gates (for MSc candidate Electrical Engineering)

The Logic R&D department of Nexperia b.v. is located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Here Logic IC’s are developed, tested, qualified and released for production. The products are used in a wide range of applications, like automotive, mobile, whitegoods and industrial. The Logic product portfolio contains standard IC’s like gates, drivers, flip-flops, voltage translators and switches, as well as customer specific IC’s like LED-drivers, comparators and interfaces.

Often our products are used as ‘glue Logic’, to fix errors in a design or application. In this way our products have been used in several iPhone generations for instance. But also, in a lot of automotive applications Nexperia Logic is used, because here standard high quality products are required. Nexperia Logic products meet the highest automotive quality standards.

For future developments, more customer specific IC’s are going to be developed, which need to meet exactly this unique combination of low cost and high quality. Reducing the pin count for standard Logic gate would exactly fit to these needs. For a standard Logic gate, currently the minimum pin count is 4: 1 input, 1 output, 1 VCC and 1 ground.

Responsibilities

For this assignment, the student has to investigate the possibility to create a Logic gate with the same functionality with 3 pins only by leaving out the VCC connection. This means the power to start-up the device must come from outside. You will investigate how this ‘energy harvesting’ can be done and how it can be used to start-up a Logic device. Also, the design of a start-up circuit is needed.

This reduced pin count design will have a great cost advantage for Nexperia and our customers. Cheaper packages can be used with smaller footprints, thus reducing circuit space. It will also give a great benefit at our manufacturing sites, as we can use standard transistor packages for Logic IC’s.

This will be a breakthrough in the worldwide Logic market and will get major customer and industry attention. Because of this, it will be highly visible on MT level of the company, and it will give the candidate a jump start in his professional career.

Skill required

For this assignment we are looking for a candidate with IC development and process knowledge, who is self-driven and eager to learn, taking initiative and having an entrepreneurial attitude. Since Nexperia is an international company, very good communication skills in English are an absolute requirement. Nexperia will provide professional guidance and support from the Logic development team in Nijmegen to help the candidate to make this assignment a success!
