Job Description

Teledyne e2v is a global leader in specialised components and subsystems for innovative solutions in medical, science, aerospace, defence and industrial applications.

The Electronics and RF Engineer role within RF Power engineering focuses on the test and validation of new product designs to ensure design intent and desired operation and specifications are met.

The successful incumbent will be involved throughout the product development lifecycle and will be required to have an efficient and effective understanding of the technology under development.

Job Summary:

Working within the project development team, devise test strategies and detailed methods so a record of product performance against design intent can be captured. This will involve both electronics and RF understanding and the ability to assess product to meet varying European Harmonised British Standards (BS EN), Military Standards (MIL-STD) and Military Specification (MIL-SPEC).

  • Identification and selection of appropriate test methodologies to ensure robust verification of new electronic and RF based systems and sub-systems. This includes the creation of compliance matrices, test specifications and results sheets, method statements.
  • Applying relevant test methods whilst undertaking a range of test activities to confirm compliance of tests against design intent / specification.
  • Planning, undertake and where appropriate the management of a range of electrical / electronic / RF design and test activities with the aim of developing robust industrial / medical / defence solutions.
  • Understand the technical concepts and practical applications of systems architecture. In particular, sub-system interfacing (including high voltage / high power connectivity) and control principles (serial, analogue and digital).
  • Participate in design reviews with project teams, stakeholders and management and present information (both written and verbal) in a style that is relevant to the audience.
  • Mentor other members of the project team as required to drive a culture of innovation throughout the product development phase whilst ensuring that the primary design focus remains on track. Be a natural team player, with the ability to listen as well as direct.
  • Whilst remaining within the boundaries of the project scope, evaluate all proposed designs with a view to improving reliability, lowering cost, reducing size, fulfilment of customer expectations and producing designs with ease of manufacture in mind.
  • As part of the development team, identify key risks and appropriate mitigation by developing effective networks with other team members and key support functions to drive a prompt resolution of problems.
  • Support the RF power leadership team with a proactive safety culture which includes risk management and mitigation.
  • Demonstrate skilled use of structured problem-solving approaches and the ability to undertake technical work packages with minimal supervision.

Skills & Experience Essential Qualifications:

  • Qualified to HNC / HND / degree level in Electrical / Electronic engineering or equivalent experience working within a professional engineering development environment.
  • Thorough understanding of power electronics, inverters, high voltage techniques, control systems and RF transmission lines, with the capability to incorporate this understanding into complex system designs.
  • Familiarisation with electrical, electronic and RF measurement techniques and experience in the use of associated equipment for the purposes of testing, evaluating and fault diagnostics.
  • Appreciation of high voltage systems and distribution techniques (able to apply safe working).
  • Familiarity with CAD design tools (schematic capture) and circuit modelling software (NI Multisim).
  • A working knowledge of RF (radio frequency) principles and ability to undertake RF power monitoring system (PMS) design. Further understanding of RF measurement techniques and results interpretation required.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies, and apply them to improve design and manufacturing processes and product performance.
  • This position may on occasions require UK and overseas travel which may be customer facing.
  • SC (security clearance) or ability to gain this vetting.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of magnetron, thyratron and travelling wave tube operation a clear advantage.
  • A background in SMPSU designs (to include HF transformers / PF correction / filtering) and associated techniques employed within power conversion designs.
  • Experience of complete product life cycle design, encompassing original development from concept through to final design and customer handover.
  • An appreciation of electrical (including ‘fail safe’ design methodology), ionising radiation, non-ionising radiation and electromagnetic (EMF) safety requirements.
  • Familiarisation with IEEE wiring regulations BS EN 7671 (+A1:2011).
  • Competent in the use of AutoCad (ideally AutoCad Electrical) as a design / capture tool.
  • Familiarisation of BS EN61010 electrical safety standard and Low Voltage directive 2014/34/EU.
  • Experience using MIL-STD’s and MIL-SPEC’s.
  • Identify relevant intellectual property and suitability for patent application.
