The Lazzara Lab in the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for an open Lab Specialist position. The Lazzara Lab is a vibrant research community of eight full-time researchers focused on projects in the areas of cancer cell signaling and precision medicine for oncology.

The Lab Specialist will engage primarily in laboratory research and will also assist the Principal Investigator in lab management. The Specialist will perform tasks independently and have authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet research needs. The Specialist may supervise support personnel and assist with managing budgets.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Perform duties including helping the Principal Investigator and other laboratory members coordinate research projects, perform experimental procedures, collect information and data, and prepare samples for analysis.
  • Participate in formulating and improving research methodologies and participate in data analysis and documentation.
  • Independently plan for the most efficient day-to-day use of time and lab resources to meet research goals.
  • Confer with the PI in developing plans for research projects, interpretation of results, and preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Train users in equipment operation and research techniques.
  • Schedule and maintain records of lab equipment and facilities. Assist in lab safety compliance and ordering of laboratory supplies.
  • May supervise research support personnel and manage budgets.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualified candidates must have:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This position can involve extensive periods of time standing or seated at a laboratory bench while conducting experiments. The position also requires use of a keyboard and other manual tasks for typical lab work (e.g., use of pipets). 

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated start date is September 2022. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,000 - $60,000 commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt level, benefited position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
