We are pioneering the digitalization of transformers, while working on the frontier of renewable energy and ultra-high voltage AC & DC applications. Hitachi Energy has an opening for the position of Research Intern in the field of data analysis and visualization for fleet electric vehicle charge optimization. The hired intern will work under the supervision of Re-search Scientist(s) in the North America Hitachi Energy Research center (Montreal, Canada). This position will be held remotely in Canada. Duration of internship: Summer and/or Fall semester (4-6 months)

Your responsibilities

• Perform literature and design survey to summarize the state-of-the-art and practice for visualizing and summarizing the behavior and performance of electric vehicle charging, vehicle fleet scheduling, and relevant multi-objective optimization algorithms.
• Investigate methodologies for summarizing and visualizing uncertainty
• Design and prototype visualizations of electric fleet charging performance for different timescales: historic, immediate, and uncertain forecasted future
• Develop statistical analyses as required to enable visualizations
• Apply an electric vehicle fleet simulator as required to generate synthetic data to visualize
• Implement selected visualizations as interactive data analytics in Python, prepare codebase.
• Prepare technical report, presentation on work accomplished during internship and/or publication in peer-reviewed conference

Your background

• Minimum qualifications:
• Must be: Masters students/candidates in Interaction Design, Computer Science or Engineering with a human-technology interaction component. Masters students/candidates in related fields of study or exceptional undergraduate students with relevant experience are also welcome to apply.
• Must-have: Demonstrated understanding of data visualization, user interface design theory and design methodology.
• Must-have: Coding experience in Python or a comparable language
• Preferred: Experience with Plotly / Dash or similar interactive visualization libraries
• Preferred: Demonstrated experience with data visualization and / or user interface design for physical systems
• Preferred: Experience with probability, statistical analysis, and optimization algorithms
• Preferred: Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken), prior experience in writing technical reports
