We are pioneering the digitalization of transformers, while working on the frontier of renewable energy and ultra-high voltage AC & DC applications. Hitachi Energy has an opening for the position of Research Intern for investigation of generalizable AI/ML technology and its application in Grid protection. The hired intern will work under the supervision of Research Scientist(s) in North America Hitachi Energy Research (NAHER). For now, this position will be held remotely. Duration of internship: 6 months (the starting and finishing dates are negotiable)

Your responsibilities

  • Evaluate methodologies to enhance Neural Architecture Search (NAS) to make it more gen-eralizable (to different data sources) and robust.
  • Apply existing ML algorithms and multi-agent theory or propose new algorithms with applications in power grid protection (image and time series data).
  • Reproduce results using the open-source codebases (e.g., GitHub).
  • Run experiments on open-source datasets, and simulated dataset with time series and com-pare with established baselines.
  • Write technical reports and/or submit papers in peer-reviewed conference.

Your background

  • Minimum qualifications:
  • PhD candidate in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical engineering and Applied Mathematics.
  • Excellent second year Master degree students with relevant experience are also welcome to apply.
  • Extensive experience in coding in Python using its ML libraries (e.g., Tensorflow, Pytorch, Keras, Numpy, Scipy, SkLearn).
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Third/Fourth year PhD candidature in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical engineering and Applied Mathematics
  • Experience with basic ML algorithms (e.g., DNN, supervised and unsupervised learning)
  • Experience with NAS, process, platforms, trends
  • Familiarity with meta learning and multi-agent learning.
  • Experience with Git.
  • Graduate level knowledge on probability, statistical methods and optimization (e.g., MLE, Gradient Descent, logistic regression)
  • Ability to do critical and innovative thinking
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken)
