Raytheon Missiles & Defense is searching for an Advanced RF Hardware Calibration Signal Processing Engineering Fellow to help guide and foster the development of advanced RADAR Signal Processing analysis and solutions in order to understand, model, create, and drive performance of our radar systems in challenging environments as a member of the System Design & Performance (SD&P) Directorate in Tucson, AZ.

The Advanced RF HW Calibration Signal Processing Engineering Fellow will be expected to leverage a deep understanding of RADAR hardware design, antenna design, radome design, and signal processing expertise, to address new challenges and develop new solutions in the design, integration, analysis, and modeling of missile RADAR systems to enhance current performance, to develop new performance, and to drive down cost in design and production of missile RADAR systems. Familiarity with defense industry processes (including design, test, and procurement) and tactical missile system knowledge is necessary. As an Engineering Fellow, responsibilities also include mentoring apprentices, collaborating across programs, advising senior leadership, establishing technology roadmaps, representing SD&P as a key spokesperson, and a continued involvement in the technical fields associated with RADAR hardware systems.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Security Requirements:

  • Must currently have a Department of Defense issued Secret Security Clearance, with ability to obtain Top Secret.
  • DoD Top Secret clearance desired with current SSBI within last 5 years. Additional clearances may also be required from the DoD.

Required Skills:

  • Twelve (12+) years of engineering experience in RF system analysis, modeling and simulation, sensor calibration, and hardware integration and test analysis.
  • Eight (8+) years of engineering experience in RADAR signal processing algorithm development including target detection, parameter estimation, tracking, recognition, and the interaction of target angle estimation with missile guidance.
  • Experience analyzing RF anechoic chamber data, developing test procedures to characterize hardware performance and resolve measurement facility artifacts.
  • Experience in application of electromagnetic theory in the design and testing of antennas and radomes
  • Experience in microwave system RF chain analysis techniques and RF system hardware design practices.
  • Experience with RF test procedures, methods, and tools (spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer, scaler network analyzer, and derivatives from these devices)
  • Experience using MATLAB and C++ programming languages.
  • Experience defining team objectives and providing solutions to complex technical tasks.
  • Experience executing concept and performance trade studies; demonstration of capabilities developed.
  • Experience participating in project design reviews and peer reviews, including technical briefings to internal leadership and external customers.
  • Experience as a “big thinker” who does not operate in a silo, but can think about where a program or product line is heading or needs to go, while considering the technical aspects of how to get us there.
  • Demonstrated ability to continuously adapt to changing business needs.
  • Author of intellectual property (patent disclosures), conference/journal publications and/or presentations in applicable technical areas within the past ten (10) years.
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Must be willing to relocate to Tucson, Arizona

Required Education:

  • Bachelors of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related fields.

Desired Skills:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related fields.
  • Proficient in understanding the implicit hardware model in a given algorithm and recognizing how the hardware does or does not conform to that model and recognizing when calibration is the solution to this discrepancy.
  • Proficient in arranging a test scheme that captures the hardware performance issue(s) and minimizes test artifacts.
  • Proficient in interpreting real-world test data and relating those results back to the models which feed predictions of algorithm performance.
  • Creative development of relevant metrics to quantify the fidelity of the model or measurement errors.
  • Strong fundamentals in radar signal processing, including detection processing theory, clutter mitigation, matched filter theory, etc.
  • Broad experience in adjacent disciplines to radar signal processing, including modeling and simulation, guidance and controls, embedded software development, and hardware in the loop (HWIL) testing.
  • Experience leading large teams as a chief engineer. Success in leading multi-disciplined teams. Direct interaction and strong relationship with customer. Known among the customer base as a leader in the area of EW.
  • Recognized as subject matter expert with prior defense contractor businesses. Evidence of providing guidance among multiple projects to ensure a robust radar solution.
  • Six (6+) years engineering experience in missile components and systems.
