Senior Principal Engineer - Execution Section Head - Controls and Actuation Systems

The Precision Controls, Mechanisms, Harness & Interconnect Department is an engineering organization within the Mechanical Products Team in Tucson, AZ. The department is in need of a Section Head to provide frontline management activities and leadership for approximately 12 engineers who develop new Control Actuation Systems (CAS) including Aerodynamic Tail Fin and Canard Steering Control Sections, Thrust Vector, Attitude and Divert Control Systems, Control Surface and Wing Deployment mechanisms, Stage Separation and Nosecone Ejection Systems, and more. Specifically, this high profile section head role is to lead the CAS execution section that provides technical oversight of our CAS development programs, development of people in project execution, training, performance management, hiring, and resource allocation. The position will drive development execution excellence. As section head, the candidate will ensure two-way communication for section members; serve as the day-to-day liaison to the programs concerning employee job assignments, performance and recognition; apprenticing and mentoring staff; growing section staff execution, technical and leadership skills. Responsibilities also include coordinating program staffing needs and reductions, optimizing resource utilization and interviewing applicants.

The Section Head will work with the Department Manager in the development of this section, including definition of charter, tactical and strategic objectives, organizational development, and in the execution of RMD engineering goals. As the engineering manager for the section, the candidate will be leading execution leads, IPT leads, execution REA’s, supplier REA’s and some combined execution/technical leads some of whom will be leading large diverse teams. The section will lead varying sizes of CAS multi-disciplined development teams ranging from 3 to 25+ engineers, providing highly skilled engineering design services across all program phases focused mainly on missile control actuation system development. The section head and section members will be called upon to provide proposal support including cost ROMs, formal Basis of Estimates, project plans and technology maturity plans.

The Section Head will engage senior management and senior technical leaders on a variety of topics and must possess superior organizational, presentation and tactical execution skills as well as being able to communicate effectively and confidently demonstrating sound emotional intelligence.

U.S. Citizenship status is required, as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Required Skills:

  • Ten (10) or more years of overall engineering experience in systems, electrical or mechanical design, and/or in the development of Control Actuation Systems
  • Prior leadership roles (frontline or project leader)
  • Five (5) years direct experience in hardware engineering design, development and/or production support
  • Experience in military/aerospace applications and environments
  • Bachelor of Science in a relevant Engineering discipline, mathematics or physics.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required

Desired Skills:

  • Twelve (12) or more years of overall engineering experience systems, electrical or mechanical design, preferably in the development of Control Actuation Systems in all development phases.
  • Taking projects from requirements development through qualification.
  • Earned-Value Management certification
  • Program management level 6 certified (level 4 preferred).
  • Masters of Science in an Engineering discipline, mathematics or physics.
  • Willingness to travel, including international
  • Familiarity with Performance Development Process and experience with delivering performance reviews
  • Familiarity with Engineering Labor Forecasting
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Proven multitasking skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in past work performance
  • Working knowledge or experience with either missile design or development, production support and integration
  • Experience with Military Missile systems and electronics
  • Experience with the proposal capture process (development of compliant basis of estimates and ROMs)
  • Familiarity with the Estimate at Complete Process
  • Six Sigma certified and demonstrated ability to implement change
  • Demonstrated team player, with excellent collaboration and mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated advocate for process improvement (e.g., CMMI, R6s), team builder and able to build strong relationships and effectively collaborate with internal and external resources.
