Test Systems Engineering, Senior Systems Engineer I

Raytheon

The Paradigm

Have you ever asked yourself, “WHY TEST?” In other words, what testing SHOULD be done and what testing SHOULD NOT be done? WHEN and WHERE is testing appropriate, and how MUCH testing is enough? HOW can testing be made more affordable?

The Test Systems Engineering (TSE) Department is seeking a strong Senior Systems Engineer with the critical skills and aptitude to drive solutions to complex questions like the ones above.

Organizational Overview

The TSE Department is a Systems Engineering organization that focuses on requirements definition and development for Test Environments (TEn) and the characterization of Test Requirements for prime hardware. A TEn is defined as the total “environment” in which testing takes place. It might be as simple as cobbling together a few pieces of test equipment to perform an early bench test on prototype hardware, or it might be as elaborate as a full-up Hardware-in-the-Loop facility. Either way, requirements are needed to properly define test conditions and capabilities, but must also facilitate faster TEn development times.

TSE seeks qualified candidates willing to innovate and collaborate with other Engineering Integrated Product Teams (IPT’s) using Model Based Engineering (MBE) processes, tools, and techniques to resolve multi-faceted challenges during TEn development. Rapidly advancing technology coupled with today’s competitive industry requires new innovations in MBE architectures and TEn capability reuse. The TSE Department is solving the problems of tomorrow.

Job Description:

As a senior engineering leader and member of the TSE team, the successful candidate will lead the development of new Test Environments (TEn) for some of the most technologically advanced weapon systems in the world. The qualified candidate must be a systems thinker – able to see the “big picture” – and coordinate across all engineering teams to define, design, and document TEn capabilities and requirements with an eye towards how prime hardware should be tested at every level (component to All-Up-Round). Detailed capabilities and requirements established by the candidate are flowed to TE designers. Requirements management and traceability is crucial to leverage and apply future reuse of TEn requirements and models.

The ideal candidate must possess working knowledge of developmental test processes and test set-ups, test equipment design with transition to the factory, and verification/validation of product hardware using proven test system methodologies and techniques. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate the ability to identify and understand technology risks and system design concepts that support incremental technical maturity/risk mitigation assessments. The understanding of Technology Readiness Levels (TRL’s) and Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRL’s) is a must. The successful candidate will have some knowledge of the development and use of models using Model Based Engineering (MBE) tools and techniques. Additional experience and expertise in the following areas is as a plus:

Customer Affordability:

  • Focus on affordability to drive well-defined test requirements and realistic parametric test limits to produce cost-effective measurement techniques.

Leadership and Business Acumen:

  • Strong technical competency in test & evaluation; filled a key role within an IPT.
  • Ability to make a business case and the value proposition for technical decisions being considered.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • US Citizenship Required.
  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of four (4) years of prior relevant experience.
  • Four (4) or more years’ experience in the areas of Systems Engineering or Systems Test, with efforts in requirements decomposition, design and development, or manufacturing activities.
  • Two (2) or more years’ applied work experience in test systems requirements definition.
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience in test methodologies for EO / IR and RF systems.
  • Two (2) or more years’ working knowledge of Test Systems design, development, integration, and verification activities across the product lifecycle.
  • Two (2) or more years’ working knowledge of Systems Engineering standard views such as Block Definition Diagrams, Context Diagrams, Use Cases, Sequence Diagrams, Flow Diagrams, etc.

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree (MS) or PH.D. in one of the aforementioned disciplines is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a technical leadership or program management role to include managing schedule and resources to meet assigned milestones.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills, with experience briefing senior leadership.
  • Experience in developing Integrated Test and Evaluation Plans.
  • Proven understanding of the DoD 5000.02 process, with focus on T&E aspects.
  • Experience using Model Based Engineering (MBE) processes, tools, and techniques, with Rhapsody and IBM Rational Manager preferred.
  • Past experience with embedded test techniques, design for test, design margin analysis, and/or design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with Agile processes and techniques.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Test Systems Engineering efforts such as Integrated Analysis Plan, Risk Register, Special Test Requirements, Critical Items, Key Characteristics, etc.
  • Experience with development, environmental qualification, production, depot/repair, and/or manufacturing operations testing.
  • Technical leadership with new business capture/pursuit experience including contribution to or authoring of white papers, RFI responses, proposal technical volumes or related experience.
  • Past work experience on proposal teams through proposal completion, including Bid/No Bid decisions.
  • Experience with DSI Express, Unified Modeling Language (UML), and/or Systems Modeling Language (SysML).
  • Familiar with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Experience in Design of Experiments (DOE), Regression Analysis, System Simulation, Math modeling and optimization, and/or Data Analysis using one or more of the following tools: Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, or other equivalent tool.
