Principal Mechanical Engineer, Diagnostics R&D

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is for highly motivated senior level engineer with a strong background of electro-mechanical engineering and/or fluidics. This position requires strong technical and communication skills to support the design and development of innovative, new invitro diagnostic analyzers and consumables. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will work as a member of the research and development team in the conception, design, development, testing and integration of electro-mechanical, thermal and optical sub-systems, and consumables, into new, innovative products. They will apply advanced technical strategy and concepts to solve complex problems and distill these down to simple, elegant product offerings which strike the appropriate balance of functionality and user engagement. The engineer is expected to be able to complete assigned projects with minimal supervision. The engineer will work with a global and interdisciplinary team within the Veterinary Medicine Research and Development organization. This position may lead a technical team and will have the responsibility to coach and review the work of lower level engineers. This position is located in Union City, CA facility, and will report to the Director of Diagnostic R&D System Development.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to technology and product development of invitro diagnostic devices.
  • Develop and implement mechanical concept design, perform tolerance analysis, thermal analysis finite element analysis or other design analysis.
  • Design, testing and development of electro-mechanical and thermal device and/or sub-systems integrated with other sub-systems, such as micro fluidics and optics.
  • Design components, including fluidic components, to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes. Work with Global Manufacturing Services to consider high volume assembly processes in design concepts.
  • Assessment of system level risks, and proposing, evaluating and implementing mitigations.
  • Ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.
  • Proficient in communicating complex technical situations in an understandable way.
  • Adapt when changes in the business environment dictate changes in priorities to meet the customer needs.
  • Collaborate with Zoetis commercial partners to provide insights into R&D’s systems and processes. Support Zoetis commercial with technical consultation.
  • Supervise and participate in technical due diligence activities for licensing / acquisition of new diagnostic instruments and technologies, biodevices and sensor technologies.
  • Seek opportunities to build new product offerings across the portfolio, consistent with the Zoetis strategy to drive a continuum of care (predict, prevent, detect, and treat) in addressing unmet customer needs.
  • Remain current with new and cross industry technologies and practices, as well as evolving external requirements that impact product design, execution, analysis and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent. Advanced degree (MS/PhD) preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience leading development of electro-mechanical devices, and/or molded consumables
  • Proven ability to innovate with a history of successful new or improved product releases
  • Demonstrated experience with solid modeling (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Expertise in fluidics, and Design of components, including fluidic components, to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering fundamentals, GD&T and analytical methods
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) or Design, Reliability & Manufacturability (DRM)
  • Prior experience in a regulated industry such as healthcare, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, or pharmaceutical companies desirable
  • Demonstrated experience in working as part of a geographically dispersed team
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrix environment, where alignment of goals and flexibility in allocating resources across functions is essential to organizational success
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including negotiating and problem solving
  • Listens and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations
  • Skilled at situational leadership
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Proficient in English required, Danish proficiency is a plus
