Essential Job Duties
We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar to join an ARPA-E project focusing on reducing nitrous oxide emissions in corn by integrating ancestral genetics with advanced nitrogen management.
These positions focus on the intersection of germplasm screening and genomic characterization to identify and functionalize alleles derived from teosinte that inhibit microbial nitrogen cycling.
The scholars will lead efforts to mine a newly developed collection of hundreds of Near-Isogenic Lines (NILs) derived from teosinte accessions to identify loci responsible for Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) and Biological Denitrification Inhibition (BDI).
Primary responsibilities include:
We are seeking candidates with expertise in quantitative/statistical genetics, bioinformatics, or comparative genomics. We are also highly interested in candidates with a molecular biology background who wish to apply transcriptomic and metabolomic methods to understand how ancestral sequence variation impacts nitrogen use efficiency (NUE+) and root-microbiome signaling. Alternatively, we will consider candidates with expertise in assaying soil enzyme activity using scalable fluorescent assays.
As a member of a multi-institutional team (NC State, University of Illinois, ORNL, and University of Arizona), the scholar will collaborate with experts in microbial ecology, crop physiology, and biogeochemical modeling. You will have the flexibility to define research trajectories within the scope of our goals to create a pipeline for “climate-smart” corn.
Professional development opportunities include mentoring students, writing manuscripts, and engaging with industry stakeholders for technology hand-off.
Please contact Joseph Gage (jlgage@ncsu.edu) and Rubén Rellán Álvarez (rrellan@ncsu.edu) with any inquiries. We encourage applications even if you are uncertain whether you meet every listed requirement.
