The Role

HDR is seeking an experienced Associate Electrical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services (BES) team in Melbourne.

This is a discipline leadership role where you will act as the technical lead for electrical engineering across a range of projects. You’ll lead delivery, maintain technical excellence, and guide a team of engineers, while remaining hands-on in design.

This role offers a clear pathway into broader design management and project leadership.

In the role of Associate Electrical Engineer, we’ll count on you to:

  • Act as the technical lead and primary point of contact for the electrical discipline on assigned projects
  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of electrical design, from concept through to construction
  • Develop and deliver complex electrical engineering designs, maintaining active involvement in technical execution
  • Take ownership of technical quality, ensuring all deliverables are accurate, coordinated, and compliant
  • Undertake and oversee design calculations, system selection, and engineering analysis
  • Support Group Leaders in broader team management activities, including recruitment input and strategic planning
  • Identify, manage, and resolve design issues, risks, and variations throughout the project lifecycle
  • Lead and coordinate the electrical discipline within multidisciplinary project teams
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships as the electrical discipline lead
  • Contribute to and support coordination across disciplines, with opportunity to grow into Design Manager / Project Management responsibilities
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, technical standards, and best practices within the team
  • Mentor and develop engineers, supporting technical capability uplift and career progression within the team
  • Participate in site activities, inspections, and contractor coordination as required
  • Participate in broader office and corporate activities as required

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Chartership with Engineers Australia (CPEng)
  • Typically, 12+ years’ experience in electrical design within a consulting environment
  • Consulting experience is essential.
  • Data Centre / Mission Critical project experience (highly desirable / preferred)
  • Strong track record in leading electrical discipline delivery on complex projects
  • Proven experience maintaining hands-on technical involvement in design and delivery
  • Strong understanding of relevant Australian codes, standards, and regulatory requirements including IEC, IEEE and TIA-942
  • Experience in coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Proven experience delivering building services (MEP) projects across all design stages
  • Experience in client relationship management and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience with project financials, resource planning, and delivery management
  • Proficiency in software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Visio, ETAP, Vipcodia, PowerCad (or similar)
