The mission of the Kansas Department of Insurance is to Regulate, Educate, and Advocate.
Regulate: Regulate and review companies that sell policies in Kansas to ensure solvency and compliance with insurance and securities laws and regulations.
Educate: Consumers about all things insurance and securities by publishing brochures and rate guides to assist in the shopping process, giving presentations to groups across Kansas and serving as a non-biased source of information.
Advocate: For a strong and competitive market to give Kansans choices when shopping for products that meet their needs.

The Assistant Chief Examiner oversees the financial examinations of insurance companies doing business in the State of Kansas to assess the companies’ financial condition and their compliance with statues, regulations, and directives of the Kansas Department of Insurance. The incumbent performs detailed review of examination documents with a focus on high-risk areas or key exhibits included in the examination file and will oversee the preparation and submission of examination reports. The incumbent will also act as the Department Designee for certain examinations performed by independent contractors. This position communicates regularly with representatives of companies under examination, state regulators, contracted examiners, and Department personnel. The Assistant Chief Examiner provides direction and input to examination staff and contractors as needed and will be responsible for recommending an appropriate course of action if any concerns are identified during the examination process. The Assistant Chief Examiner reports directly to the Chief Examiner.
The Kansas Department of Insurance is currently accredited through the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s Accreditation Program. To maintain its accredited status, the Kansas Department of Insurance must ensure continued compliance with the accreditation standards pertaining to sufficient and qualified staff and resources. College degrees for financial examiners and supervisors should focus on accounting, insurance, finance, or a related field. Additionally, as a Department Designee, the individual in this position must also be a Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) or possess substantially similar experience, qualifications, and background.

The Financial Surveillance team is comprised of individuals with the capacity and aptitude to achieve the optimal goal of ensuring the financial solvency of insurance companies that operate under Kansas insurance laws. They work closely together to make the best possible decisions for the Kansas Department of Insurance and Kansas consumers. Licensing & Certification: Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) designation or substantially similar experience, qualifications, and background. Maintaining the CFE certification is a condition of employment for this position.
Minimum Qualifications: Five years’ experience with a state insurance department, contract firm performing insurance regulatory examinations, public accounting firm, or similar entity, or an insurance company in a financial or audit related area of which at least three years was in an Examiner-in-Charge or supervisory capacity.
