What To Expect

The R&D Test Systems Engineering (TSE) team is responsible for identifying, designing, building, and commissioning scalable test solutions to accelerate product development cycles by leveraging Tesla’s technology to reduce cost and complexity. TSE is a rare team at Tesla that supports validation of both vehicle, energy and robotics programs across engineering and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of Tesla’s business and really feel the impact of Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

As an Equipment Design Engineer on TSE, you will own the design and implementation of engineered test solutions that integrate with systems from all sides Tesla’s product arsenal (Energy, Vehicle & Robotics). The candidate should demonstrate a history of innovation, technical prowess, project management skills, a strong work ethic, and an ability to work cross functionally. Designs will apply skillsets in electromechanics, design for manufacturability/assembly, reliability, and functionality. At the same time, system-level understanding is paramount to defining a successful test solution. You will work together with internal customers to iterate, test, and learn as well as coordinate rapid product development cycles with external vendors. This is a very hands-on role.

Participate in cross-functional development of product requirements

Agile concept development / CAD creation of concepts

Support internal product build, commissioning, and launches at a global scale

Mechanical analysis (dynamic, structural, thermal, fluid)

Specifying proper equipment/instruments for efficient use in systems

Documentation of an entire project (component drawings, assembly MIs, bill of materials, analysis, etc.)

Task tracking and collaboration in Jira/Confluence

Supplier coordination for high volume contract manufacturing

Collaboration with other engineers and technicians to develop excellent testing solutions

What You'll Bring

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

Experience in test equipment design, EV powertrain design, or other applicable mechanical engineering field or equivalent experience

5+ years showing technical aptitude for developing a system from concept to delivery (large electro-mechanical, rotating, and/or test systems preferred)

Proficiency in 3D modeling and 2D drafting (CATIA preferred)

Exceptional understanding and experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (fluency preferred)

Understanding of manufacturing methods: Machine from billet, cut and weld, sheet metal forming, 3D printing, etc.

Experience with rotating systems, including rotor dynamics, bearings, seals, and lubrication

Basic understanding of high voltage and electrical principles

Demonstrated record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously and working in a high pressure, tight deadline situation
