The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The position will fall under jurisdiction of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations, which is responsible for the operation and maintenance and protection of New York City’s drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems, the protection of adjacent waterways and natural drainage (wetlands), and the development of the Department’s Capital Water and Sewer Infrastructure Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized contractors. In addition, BWSO has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects as they relate to the City’s water or sewer systems.

BWSO is seeking to hire a motivated Civil Engineering Intern for the Division of Engineering, Connections & Permitting – Review & Permitting section’s Site Connection Unit.

As a Civil Engineering Intern for BWSO’s Site Connection Unit, selected candidate will:

  • Performs elementary level engineering work and assists Engineer-In-Charge with the review of engineering proposals submitted by other agencies to determine the impact on the NYC sewer and water supply systems, and to ensure that proposed drainage and water supply facilities will be built and/or maintained in conformance with the latest DEP Standards and requirements.
  • Assists the Engineer-in-Charge representing the Division of Site Connection, Green Infrastructure & Plan Review in meeting with the representatives from City and State agencies and Private developer's filing professionals.
  • Under the guidance of Engineer-in-Charge, interacts with consulting engineers submitting projects related to "Site Connection, Green Infrastructure and Plan Review Sections" for proper review and approval in accordance with the Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations requirements.
  • Under the guidance of Engineer-In-Charge, performs research and responds to written requests for shopdrawings and field changes of basic design.
  • Under the direction of Engineer-In-Charge, review site connection application.

Preferred skills:

1. Aptitude in reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings, plans, reports, and specifications.

2. Excellent oral & written communication skills, as well as professional writing skills.

3. Experience with using Microsoft Office suite, GIS applications, Adobe Acrobat is preferred.

4. NYS Driver’s License.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A degree in any other engineering area or in civil engineering technology is not acceptable.
