This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 2 $104,100 - $172,200

R&D Engineer 3 $125,200 - $211,300

The W88 Systems Engineering Group (W-4) is looking to hire and fill an R&D Engineer level 2 or 3 position. W-4 is responsible for the technical and programmatic oversight of matters pertaining to the W88 Nuclear Weapon Systems.

The selected candidate will serve as a System Engineer within the W88 System Engineering Group supporting other System Engineers in W88 qualification activities as well as contributing to the future development of new W88 and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) programs. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Applying and interpreting existing discipline-specific engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for a wide assortment of complex problems.
  • Participating in and contributing to the completion of milestones on projects as assigned.
  • Work in a team environment to address and solve a problem within the system, sub-system, component, or material.
  • Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapon Engineering Experience

Experience and knowledge of nuclear weapon system design and development; which may include experience with testing, qualification, requirements, assembly, component development, production, and/or surveillance

Engineering Experience

Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following areas: engineering design, development, qualification, assembly/production, or testing. Demonstrated knowledge of systems engineering principles (e.g., system architecture, requirements management, and the verification and validation process).

Time Management

Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for technical projects.

Team work & Collaboration

Demonstrated ability to lead a team as well as be part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment, and to interact effectively with a variety of organizations. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers.

Self-Starter

Demonstrated ability to work independently; exercises personal initiative.

Communication

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management of projects.
  • Prior experience with the W88 or other weapon Systems detailed design and testing which may include any of the following:
  • ground testing, flight testing, hydrodynamic testing, or materials testing.
  • weapon assembly techniques and/or component fabrication.
  • weapon system mechanical and electrical interfaces.

Education/Experience at the lower level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity in working with one or more Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) production agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering authorization system, document management, Ability to recognize technical problems and develop teams to conduct research, analysis and testing to establish solutions.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management and DOE/DoD nuclear weapons customers.
  • Experience with assembly practices, modeling, or analysis tools
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer aided design (CAD) component modeling, and creating engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with modern manufacturing methods and associated tooling.
  • Familiarity with modern inspection and measurement techniques and associated tooling.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering design drawings and effectively apply fundamental problem analysis
  • Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.
  • Active Q Clearance.

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
