The Entertainment Technical Technician is to support the daily operations of the Entertainment department by safely installing, programming, maintaining, inspecting and repairing audio, video, lighting and control systems for all Entertainment elements employed throughout the theme park. This includes show venues, street elements, park sound, marquee events, off-site events, special events and facilities assigned within the Entertainment Department at Universal Studios Hollywood ("USH").

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for installation, rigging and removal of theatrical equipment as per Universal Parks and Resorts safety standards
  • Able to accurately troubleshoot by demonstrating proper operation of audio, video, electrical, lighting and control systems, and detect when systems are not functioning properly.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain and repair complex audio, video, lighting, and control components for day-to-day operations
  • Program and operate industry standard control consoles, computers, servers, software, and hardware
  • Assist Entertainment management in all assigned functions.
  • Respond and resolve Entertainment element maintenance issues that affect show quality and guest experience in a timely manner
  • Communicate accurately and in a timely manner the matters that pertain to the operational status/readiness of all venue shows, street shows, events, and park audio to the Entertainment management
  • Maintain Entertainment equipment in safe, operating order. Make appropriate repairs as necessary and recommend when vendors should be contacted for servicing of equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve core issues
  • Adhere to all EHS and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) within the Entertainment department and USH overall
  • Assist in the development and implementation of processes which enhance system efficiencies and increase productivity
  • Ensure that all scheduled and unscheduled work is correctly documented.
  • Ensure that installation drawings and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are correctly documented and distributed
  • Provide and promote extraordinary guest service for USH and its visitors.
  • Maintain proficiency in all areas as it pertains to his/her area(s) of responsibilities assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Minimum of six years’ experience in technical theatrical entertainment
  • Ability & willingness to work a variety of schedules, overtime, weekends, and holidays with short notice
  • Ability and willingness to respond to incidents in locations requiring climbing, fall-protection, and other non-traditional work-environments
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written on a technical level
  • Demonstrates ability to work with all levels of employees and management, and willingness to give assistance to co-workers, a strong team player
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently under pressure; proactive thinker/self-starter
  • Must be able to operate aerial lifts as per Universal Parks and Resorts safety standards
  • Must specialize in a minimum of two categories: Audio, Video, Lighting and/or Control Systems:
    • Audio Specialist
      • Expert classification in Yamaha, Allen & Heath digital, and QSC mixers/amplifiers with the ability to program, route, and network using standard Gigabit Ethernet protocols
      • QSC QSYS Level 2 certification
      • Expert ability to program, route and operate QLab, Mainstage, Midi Designer Pro and Midi over Lan software to its corresponding hardware device
      • Able to repair and replace loudspeaker components including drivers, diaphragms, passive crossovers, and amplifier modules
      • Expert knowledge in the latest computer operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and iOS
      • Expert knowledge in wireless network routers and switches controlling audio and show control systems
      • Expert knowledge of audio-over-ethernet protocols such as Q-LAN and DANTE
      • Expert knowledge in UCI and boardroom equipment
      • Expert knowledge of low impedance and constant voltage (70-volt) loudspeaker systems
      • Expert knowledge of cable installation, routing, and compliance codes as per Universal Parks and Resorts standards
      • Expert ability in soldering, constructing cabling systems and constructing rack builds
    • Video Specialist
      • Expert knowledge of video playback systems and servers including QLab, Watchout, Pandoras Box and Brightsign
      • Expert knowledge in the latest computer operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and iOS
      • Expert knowledge of video codecs including conversion and interfacing to equipment specifications
      • Working knowledge of various hardware systems including Alcorn McBride, Gefen, AJA and Blackmagic
      • Working knowledge of camera systems including CCTV, PTZ, portable and professional camcorders
      • Able to setup, maintain and repair video displays, projection screens and hardware
      • Expert knowledge in network routers and switches controlling video and show control systems
      • Expert knowledge of cable installation, routing and compliance codes as per Universal Parks and Resorts standards
    • Lighting Specialist
      • Proven ability to operate and program industry standard lighting control platforms at an expert level using automated theatrical lighting fixtures and pixel maps, including but not limited to ETC EOS, High End Systems Hog, GrandMA, Paradigm and/or Mosaic.
      • Ability to safely shop prep, hang, circuit, focus, and strike lighting equipment and cable to execute a provided lighting plot
      • Ability to maintain, repair and replace conventional and intelligent theatrical lighting fixtures including motorized components and moving parts
      • Expert knowledge of electrical standards and compliance codes as per Universal Destination and Experiences (UDX) standards
      • Expert knowledge of DMX, MIDI, OSC, SMPTE and/or other show control communication protocols
      • Expert knowledge of lighting control networking protocols and tools, including sACN, ArtNet, Net3, RDM, and other networking protocols.
    • Control Specialist
      • Expert knowledge of network systems and servers including QLab, Q-Sys, Weigl Controls, and Alcorn McBride
      • Expert knowledge in the latest computer operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and iOS
      • Expert knowledge of RS-232, MIDI, OSC, SMPTE and other communication protocols
      • Able to setup, maintain and repair ethernet network control system hardware
      • Expert knowledge in network routers and switches controlling show control systems
      • Expert knowledge of cable installation, routing and compliance codes as per Universal Parks and Resorts standards
  • Experienced in design and technical documents for disciplines listed above
  • Must pass written and practical exams pertinent to the specialized field(s)
  • Must possess knowledge in multiple areas consisting of electrical/electronics, sound/video systems, lighting systems, mechanical/structural components, program logic controllers (PLC), inventory control inspection, quality control procedures
  • Proficiency in both Microsoft and Apple operating systems

Desired Characteristics

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
