College Laboratory Technician (CLT) for Civil Engineering

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

  • Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment
  • Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisitions
  • Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff
  • Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories
  • Maintains safety and hygiene standards
  • Documents laboratory activities
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York seeks an experienced and proactive College Laboratory Technician to oversee and maintain the department’s computational laboratory resources (both virtual and in person).

The position will report to the Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and will ensure a smooth and efficient operation to support instructional and research activities, as well as computer support for faculty and staff. This position requires strong technical expertise, organizational abilities, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving in a dynamic academic environment.

College Lab Technician:

  • Interacts directly with faculty, staff, and students to identify computational needs.
  • Researches and determines the hardware, software, networking, and related equipment requirements for teaching and research applications.
  • Prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisition of equipment, and as needed, designs and fabricates the equipment.
  • Sets up, maintains, and organizes student and research computational laboratories.
  • Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards.
  • Maintains required documentation related to computer laboratory activities.
  • Maintains computer hardware, software, and cabling inventories.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. This position may also require the ability to supervise others.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to work independently and prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Organized, and maintains inventory and records
  • Adaptable, and willing to research new technologies as needs change
  • A degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science
  • Strong knowledge of networking, system administration, and troubleshooting practices

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: $65,041- $76,147. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
