The University Library at the University of Wisconsin–Stout invites applications for two visionary academic librarian positions: the Open Innovation & Engagement Librarian (.92 FTE) and the AI Literacy Librarian (1.0 FTE). Open Innovation & Engagement Librarian

The Open Innovation and Engagement Librarian champions the creation, adoption, and evolution of open educational resources (OER) that support high-impact learning experiences aligned with UW-Stout’s mission as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University. This role supports faculty in developing affordable, accessible, and engaging learning materials. The position amplifies the use of digital learning tools through course-integrated instruction; embeds OER into polytechnic pathways, including workforce-ready credentials; and enhances the library’s outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required

• Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS/MLS) from an ALA-accredited program, master’s in education, master’s in instructional design, master’s in data science, or master’s in a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to simplify technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated experience with academic research support, digital literacy, and instruction.
• Experience with AI platforms and tools for education, including generative AI, language models, and prompt engineering.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Open Innovation and Engagement

• Supports faculty and instructors in the discovery, creation, dissemination, identification, accessibility and adoption of engaging open materials, including AI-assisted textbooks, simulations, and datasets.
• Supports the expansion of multimodal instruction by working with faculty during the course design phase to identify digital resources and OERs that enhance the online learning experience of students.
• Develops and coordinates initiatives and services designed to support finding, assessing, using, and creating OERs in collaboration with colleagues.
• Champions the creation, adoption, and evolution of next-gen OER—such as AI-generated, mixed-reality, and holographic learning objects—ensuring accessibility, and industry relevance.
• Embeds open resources into polytechnic pathways including badging, micro credentials, and stackable learning for industry skills.
• Tests new AR/VR or mixed-reality OER platforms for STEM and design courses.
• Trains faculty on prompt engineering to create AI-generated case studies or labs that remain openly licensed.

Instructional Support and Liaison Responsibilities

• Teaches information literacy concepts through course-integrated instruction and individual research consultation.
• Serves as liaison to assigned departments, consulting, communicating to, and collaborating with students, faculty, and staff to meet their information and instructional needs.
• Collaborates with other instruction librarians to plan, promote, and assess information literacy initiatives.
• Develops and maintains tutorials, guides, and learning objects related to library instruction and services in collaboration with library research and instruction team.
• Participates in library reference services including research consultations and online chat.

Outreach and Engagement

• Co-leads and coordinates the academic outreach efforts of the library including marketing, communication, and social media.
• May supervise or direct graduate assistants and student workers as assigned.

AI Literacy Librarian

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the landscape of knowledge creation, access, and application, UW-Stout seeks an AI Literacy Librarian. This position will bridge the gap between traditional library services and emerging AI-driven technologies and help shape the future of academic librarianship at the University.

The AI Librarian will provide consultations, training, and resources to support the academic community in effectively applying AI in research and learning. The role involves integrating AI literacy into the library instruction program. Additionally, the AI Librarian will collaborate on campus-wide initiatives to foster interdisciplinary discussions on AI, contribute to advancing digital literacy, and contribute strategies that promote responsible use of AI across the university.

This position is ideal for a dynamic professional who thrives at the intersection of information science, emerging technologies, and inclusive pedagogy. The successful candidate will champion AI literacy as a core component of digital citizenship and workforce readiness in a polytechnic context.

AI & Digital Innovation

• Leads the integration and development of AI technologies to improve the library’s teaching and learning activities, research support, information access, and scholarly communications in collaboration with colleagues.
• Develops and delivers AI-related consultations, training programs, and outreach initiatives to both students and researchers, creating and maintaining resources (guides, tutorials, workshops) to enhance their understanding and application of AI in academic and research contexts.
• Supports students and faculty in understanding the implications of AI-generated content, including authorship, citation, and intellectual property.
• Partners with the AI Integration Technologist, instructional designers, IT, and academic departments to pilot emerging technologies in teaching and learning.

Stays informed on the evolving landscape of AI ethics, policies, and regulations, including issues related to data privacy, bias, and transparency, and champion the ethical use of AI in library settings, with a focus on privacy, equity, and accessibility.
