Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Actuary to lead pricing activities across major commercial and personal lines of business. This role is pivotal in shaping financial strategy through advanced actuarial analysis. The Senior Actuary will apply expert-level actuarial techniques to recommend profitable pricing structures, contributing directly to the company’s financial performance.

As a strategic partner across the organization, the Senior Actuary oversees the development of rate filings, monitors regulatory and rate bureau activity, and collaborates with senior leadership on corporate rate matters.

The ideal candidate will reside in the Harrisburg PA area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Business Acumen

  • Oversees the preparation of rate filings that include appropriate supporting exhibits and documentation, and that reflect anticipated regulatory issues
  • Monitors the activity of rate bureaus and regulator agencies.
  • Keeps apprised of changes, developments, and new research and methods in ratemaking.
  • As company representative, participates in external rate bureau and industry committee activities in order to develop more effective actuarial methods for internal use and improve upon the current level of knowledge in the actuarial field.

Negotiation

  • Clearly communicates recommendations to the Loss Reserve Committee, Underwriting Operations management, or ERM Committee, and communicates with senior management about corporate rate, reserve issues.
  • Conducts research and makes recommendations regarding emerging topics in actuarial-related insurance issues.

Results Oriented

  • Develops or directs the development of computer application systems for analysis, manipulation, and reporting of actuarial data.
  • Advises and acts as consultant to the Company Underwriting Operations and Claims Divisions with regard to data analysis.

Time & Priority Management

  • Plans and directs all actuarial activities involved with pricing for all major lines of business.
  • Supervises Pricing Analyst, actuarial assistant(s), and/or actuarial trainee staff .
  • May supervise the activities of technical staff as needed and serve as mentor to and has assignment authority over the Rate Analyst, Pricing Analyst, and/or Actuarial Assistant(s).

Decision Making

  • Accurately and completely analyzes data and information in order to make recommendations of profitable rate and price levels.

Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Senior Actuary or Vice President, Actuarial

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Interacts with all levels of the organization internally, as well as interaction with external regulatory agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Credentials

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, actuarial science or similar curriculum providing rigorous analytical training
  • Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society required, Fellow preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of general Actuarial experience. Prefer prior experience to include 4 years of ratemaking as appropriate

Technical/Professional Knowledge

  • Requires a high level of quantitative analytical skills
  • Familiarity with property and casualty insurance accounting and finance
  • A high level of proficiency in personal computer spreadsheet and database skills
  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements for ratemaking and filing
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills

  • Must be able to see and effectively use a computer monitor.

  • Must be able to hear and communicate via the telephone and/or monitoring devices to both internal and external clients.
  • Must be able to present information to individuals and groups.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply concepts that may or may not be based upon established guidelines.
  • Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance and adhere to scheduled work hours.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to travel, with overnight stays required.
