A Day in the Life

As a Senior Manufacturing Controls Engineer, you’ll play a key role in advancing our New Product Development (NPD) efforts for cutting-edge surgical devices. Your expertise in automation, process controls, and validation will help transform design concepts into reliable, scalable production systems—ultimately improving patient outcomes around the world.

You’ll collaborate closely with AME, R&D, Sourcing, and supplier partners to specify, develop, and validate advanced assembly tooling and automation systems that ensure safety, quality, and efficiency throughout the product life cycle.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Plan, develop, and manage technical and financial specifications for reliability, prototype, and production assembly tooling and automation equipment.
  • Partner with AME and R&D teams during design and FMEA reviews to identify assembly risks and implement robust, manufacturable solutions.
  • Conduct Design for Assembly (DFA) analyses and drive effective resolutions with design/development teams.
  • Provide input to Assembly Tooling Strategy and Process FMEAs, integrating controls that mitigate high-risk failure modes.
  • Contribute to the Capital Asset Request (CAR) process by defining cost estimates aligned with standard cost and capacity requirements.
  • Participate in supplier selection, proposal reviews, and quotation analyses to identify capable and cost-effective automation partners.
  • Generate purchase requisitions and manage supplier relationships for design, build, and acceptance testing of capital assembly equipment.
  • Lead equipment design reviews, ensuring compliance with Medtronic fabrication standards, safety requirements, and documentation practices.
  • Direct factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) and support installation qualification (IQ) to release equipment to production.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and upgrade PLCs, vision systems, HMIs, and data acquisition systems on both new and existing equipment.
  • Deliver technical training to Maintenance and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure smooth handover of automated systems.
  • Investigate and integrate emerging controls technologies to continuously improve manufacturing capability and process efficiency.
  • Support product transfer deliverables from pilot to receiving plants, ensuring equipment readiness and process repeatability.
  • Evaluate tooling maintainability, repeatability, and perform Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA).
  • Advise management on any unmitigated risks or developments that could impact time-to-market or product cost targets.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

  • Batchelor’s degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR
  • Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience OR
  • PhD with 0 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI design, motion control, and vision systems (Allen-Bradley preferred)
  • Knowledge of industrial safety systems, equipment validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and FDA/GMP manufacturing environments
  • Experience developing and commissioning automated assembly systems for medical devices or other regulated industries
  • Strong understanding of robotics, sensors, and data acquisition systems
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical projects and supplier management efforts
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD, or similar tools for controls documentation
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$100,000.00 - $150,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
