This program is designed for students currently pursuing an associate or technical degree, who have completed a portion of their curriculum, and will be completing their program after the internship experience. It is not designed for graduates.

Job Description:

3-month positions (May 2026 through August 2026)

8-month positions (May 2026 through December 2026)

Duties/Tasks:

Duties at the surface coal mine will be wide and varied, based on needs of the operation. These duties may include all or some of the following:

  • Perform safety inspections and corrections.
  • Perform mechanical work on heavy equipment and small diesel engines.
  • Remove and install engines and components.
  • Assemble and disassemble engines, brake adjustments, repair clutches and wheel bearings.
  • Perform general repairs on trucks, tractors and light vehicles.
  • Perform engine tune ups and field work.
  • Service, operate and test large equipment. Clean the shop.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The successful applicant will be support as a diesel / auto mechanic on scrapers, blades, dozers, haul trucks, miscellaneous small equipment and light vehicles. Applicants need to have a valid driver’s license, be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and will work rotating shifts.

Educational Requirements:

Enrolled in accredited diesel mechanic / automotive program and in good academic standing.
