Los Angeles Influence: How Hollywood and entertainment are shaping politics
POLITICO is looking for an experienced and well-sourced reporter in Los Angeles to cover the intersection of Hollywood, entertainment, technology, sports and media and politics in California, the U.S. and internationally. The assignment demands versatility, with the reporter writing a variety of politically focused stories on influential figures and issues across the sectors.
The political environment increasingly demands that officeholders and candidates capture and dominate the attention economy, and this reporter will explore the many new and traditional avenues they’re exploiting to deliver their message — from podcasters with the ears of key voters to celebrities, star athletes and influencers who can turn their legions of followers for or against a candidate or issue.
The LA influence reporter also will explore the motivations of traditional rainmakers in state and national politics, chasing scoops on major donors and who they are supporting, while bringing to life the inner-workings of one of the country’s power centers — a magnet for 2028 hopefuls.
POLITICO is expanding into this new territory as Los Angeles prepares to host the World Cup next summer and then the 2028 Olympic Games – a juggernaut that carries incredibly high stakes for local, state and federal politicians, as well as the region’s economic engines. The ideal candidate will be able to write with authority on key debates touching on politics, policy and power in Los Angeles and Washington.
The reporter will have a solid network of knowledgeable sources across Hollywood, tech, media and sports and be able to leverage it to produce stories with provocative and fresh ideas in a confident voice. We want a fast, determined reporter who will break news and deliver high-impact enterprise — for an informed subscriber audience as well as a state, national and global readership.
This is a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new coverage area for POLITICO as it continues to expand in California, and to join a high-powered team of reporters and editors exploring overlapping issues in the state. POLITICO recently added its first housing and development reporter to focus expensively on the post-fire rebuilding of Los Angeles, and is expanding its team across Southern California.
The Los Angeles-based journalist will work with other POLITICO politics and policy reporters in Sacramento, San Francisco, Washington, London and Brussels, connecting the dots across global power centers to tell readers what’s coming next in Hollywood and Southern California, and why it matters.

About Us.
POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence that anticipates tomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.
Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.
Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals—Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York—form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources others don't even know exist.
Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.
These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity in media: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.
POLITICO is a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE, a family-owned transatlantic media company headquartered in Berlin and New York.
