About the role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D are seeking an experienced High Voltage substation Commissioning Engineers to join our dynamic team. You will be responsible

for the testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of high voltage (HV)

electrical systems, ensuring their safe and efficient function and readiness for

operational service. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with strong

technical expertise, a safety-first mindset, and a passion for working with high

voltage systems in a variety of settings such as substations throughout the UK.

What you'll be doing

  • Commissioning & Testing: Lead the commissioning of high voltage
  • electrical equipment and systems (up to 400kV and beyond), including
  • transformers, switchgear, protection relays, cables, and substation
  • auxiliary equipment.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to HV
  • systems, ensuring timely rectification within budget.
  • Documentation: Prepare and maintain commissioning reports, test
  • results, technical documentation, risk assessments/method statements,
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure that all systems meet relevant design,
  • technical and safety standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with both client and internal
  • design/commissioning engineers, project managers and site teams to
  • ensure successful project delivery.
  • Safety Focus: Adhere to and promote strict health & safety, and
  • environmental protocols during all operations, including CDM and clients
  • Safety Rules.

Who we're looking for

Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred, HNC in electrical engineer being the minimum requirement.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of demonstratable experience in commissioning high voltage equipment and systems (including up to 400kV).

Technical Knowledge: Demonstratable experience on:

    • Power transformers
    • Current/voltage transformers
    • Circuit breakers, disconnectors
    • LVAC board/Deisel Generator schemes
    • Substation Control Systems
    • Protection and Control Systems

Practical experience in:

    • Commissioning Switching Programmes
    • Multiple relay application and test software
    • Omicron CMC software
    • Primary/secondary injection testing
  • Certifications: National Grid TP141 would be highly desirable along with SSE and National Grid operational authorisations.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills in high-pressure environments.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel to various project sites around the UK as required.
