Job Description

  • Work on a team of Taiwan and US based engineers to support all aspects of VCSEL device characterization on R&D programs. Coordinate with VCSEL design engineers and technical program managers (PMs) from the initial product concept through release to manufacturing
  • Device characterization in Taiwan office test lab of VCSEL devices coming out of Taiwan based wafer fab facility. Tests typically include DC LIV, optical spectra, thermal resistance, beam properties (far-field and near-field), RF S21/S11, RIN, eye-diagrams, BERT and more. Provide data analysis and work with R&D Design team to understand the input design parameters with the output test parameters.
  • Manage the test lab including maintenance and regular calibration of equipment and ordering new fixtures and components to address new R&D requirements like higher-speed or different wavelengths. Upgrading or setting up new R&D test stations including all hardware and software. Coordinate specifying, researching and procuring new capital test equipment to support future R&D programs.
  • For R&D programs, coordinate the wafer probe testing of the devices (LIV, S21/S11, RIN, FF). Create test plans and submit detail instructions to the wafer fab including the wafer test map, test conditions and recipe parameters. Process the wafer fab data and compile into Lumentum database for additional analysis coordinated with the design team.
  • As part of Lumentum’s local Taiwan office, provide support on any special R&D activities with the local wafer fab and local reliability, assembly and failure analysis service providers. This could include destructive failure analysis, chip-on-carrier assembly for testing or customer samples, on-site support for special testing services and more.
  • Provide updates on the characterization data to external customers and internal teams. Reporting in the form of email updates, customer-facing presentations, internal NPI reviews and documented performance validation reports.
  • Depending on prior job experience could manage junior engineers’ or technicians’ test activities

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of MS degree plus 4 years of experience or PhD degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other relevant majors.
  • Extensive experience in high-speed testing of semiconductor lasers (edge emitting or VCSEL) or similar optoelectronic devices.
  • Device characterization including laser diode testing at wafer probe and chip-on-carrier for light-current-voltage (LIV), spectra, near field and far field beam parameters under CW and RF operation
  • Experience with software data analysis tools (such as Excel, JMP, Minitab) and data processing software (such as Python, Matlab).

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with semiconductor laser devices (Edge emitting or VCSEL) including epi growth, wafer fabrication and characterization.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor device physics, process technology and test equipment.
