WHO WE ARE

Optiver is a global market maker founded in Amsterdam, with offices in London, Chicago, Austin, New York, Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Mumbai. Established in 1986, today we are a leading liquidity provider, with close to 2,000 employees in offices around the world, united in our commitment to improve the market through competitive pricing, execution and risk management. By providing liquidity on multiple exchanges across the world in various financial instruments we participate in the safeguarding of healthy and efficient markets. We provide liquidity to financial markets using our own capital, at our own risk, trading a wide range of products: listed derivatives, cash equities, ETFs, bonds and foreign currencies.

Since its establishment in 2012, our Shanghai office is a rapidly growing participant in the Chinese markets, trading exchange-listed futures, options and equities in China mainland. Our vision is to become the trusted partner in the development of Chinese financial markets. With the culture of a start-up but the backing of a 35+ year-old trading firm, the Optiver Shanghai office is truly unique. Everyone who joins us will help shape the future of our company and its global impact. Get ready: we are only just beginning.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As an FPGA Engineer, you’ll work with internal stakeholders (including trading, risk, compliance and research teams) to develop and enhance Optiver’s low latency execution and network optimisation platforms. These platforms are critical in placing orders from auto-trading systems with ultra-low latency, implementing risk boundary checks, order management and exchange connectivity. You'll get to:

  • Design, implement and optimise high-performance FPGA solutions for order placement, risk checks and exchange connectivity, owning the full development cycle from concept through to testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.
  • Continuously improve system performance and engineering quality, applying deep FPGA expertise to minimise logic depth and achieve zero-latency designs, while championing best practices through code reviews, tooling improvements and fast feedback cycles.
  • Drive innovation by integrating cutting-edge technologies, including the latest FPGA devices, and help expand the team’s capabilities in machine learning or heterogeneous computation, particularly in the context of the Chinese market.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including traders, researchers and software engineers, to co-develop impactful, business-aligned solutions that respond to rapidly changing market conditions.
  • Contribute to team development and long-term success, by mentoring junior developers, sharing knowledge, and growing into a business-minded engineer with full-stack FPGA mastery and strategic influence.

WHO YOU ARE

  • 5+ years of experience in FPGA development, ideally in high-frequency trading (HFT) or other performance-critical environments.
  • Proficient in VHDL, Verilog or SystemVerilog.
  • Basic skills in either C++, C or Python.
  • Experience working with Linux and understanding of computer networks and protocols (TCP, IP, and UDP).
  • A proven track record of delivering outstanding results and achieving top performance in previous positions.
  • An active and enthusiastic approach to coding, a natural aptitude for problem-solving, and a keen interest in exploring emerging FPGA technologies and relevant industry advancements.
  • A strong innovative mindset to drive the development of novel and efficient designs.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

  • A performance-based bonus structure unmatched anywhere in the industry. We combine our profits across desks, teams and offices into a global profit pool, fostering a truly collaborative environment.
  • The chance to work alongside diverse and intelligent peers in a rewarding environment.
  • Training, mentorship and personal development opportunities.
  • Daily breakfast, lunch and snacks.
  • Gym membership, sports and leisure activities, plus weekly in-house chair massages
  • Regular social events, clubs and Friday afternoon drinks.
