Role Overview

The Lead of Scientific Computing will be responsible for building and sustaining the computational infrastructure that powers scientific discovery, product development, and AI innovation across DAISE, Science, and Product Development. This role will serve as a strategic and technical leader, ensuring that computational tools, platforms, and workflows are scalable, efficient, connected, and aligned with the needs of cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Platform Leadership: Architect and maintain a robust scientific computing platform that supports bioinformatics, statistics, and machine learning pipelines (e.g., RNAseq, predictive modeling).
• Cross-Functional Enablement: Partner with scientists, engineers, and AI/ML teams to deliver reusable, production-grade computational tools and services.
• Cloud Infrastructure: Lead the deployment and optimization of cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS, SageMaker, Databricks) to support scalable and cost-effective computing.
• Workflow Development: Design and implement reproducible, automated workflows using tools like Nextflow and Airflow.
• Team Enablement: Provide training, documentation, and office hours to empower users across Science and Product to leverage computing resources effectively.
• Governance & Compliance: Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
• Cost Optimization: Monitor and manage cloud and compute resource usage to ensure cost-effective operations, including implementing usage dashboards, right-sizing infrastructure, and advising teams on best practices for resource efficiency.
• Innovation & Strategy: Contribute to the strategic roadmap for digital capabilities, including the Connected Lab initiative and AI-driven discovery platforms.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in scientific computing, software engineering, or a related field.
• Deep expertise in workflow orchestration (e.g., Nextflow), cloud platforms (AWS, SageMaker), and data engineering.
• You are half scientist, half engineer that enjoys solving computational life science problems that require scaling.
• Knowledge and love of Docker. When you first learned about Docker, you called your parents and told them you found something special.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and mentor technical teams.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Experience working in genomics, computational biology, or agricultural science is a plus.
• Track record of creating reusable pipelines.
• Demonstrated cost savings and efficiency improvements in compute resource utilization.
