Job Description:

If you’re a financial person but also a people person - join the Nebraska Department of Education as our Assistant Director of Central Accounting! This position will provide direction and guidance for all central accounting areas including payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable, and serve as back-up for the Director of Central Accounting. This includes providing training to other NDE employees and supervising our Central Accounting Associates, not just the numbers!

This is an experienced team with lots of knowledge to share – they’re looking for candidates with high attention to detail and great customer service skills. Microsoft Excel is used daily at an advanced level, so a close personal friendship with Excel is a must! Office Location: This position is assigned to our office located at 84th & O St, Lincoln, NE.

Pay Grade 9: $69,746.51/year

This rate is based upon available budget funds; any offer will be made at this rate.

Essential Functions

  • Leads central accounting staff in providing customer service to internal and external stakeholders. Prioritizes, organizes, and monitors ticketing system requests, and responds to escalated requests.
  • Maintains policies and procedures for Central Accounting and NDE payable activities (e.g., invoices, procurement, expense reimbursements).
  • Extracts, compiles, organizes, and analyzes financial data from vouchers, ledgers, journals, and other accounting documents and databases to develop and prepare spreadsheets, reports, statements, and other financial documents.
  • Processes bi-weekly payroll, including initial review, running pre-payroll and journal entries, transferring data, and verifying accuracy.
  • Pre-audits and monitors all grant payments.
  • Coordinates contract management and payment database, and processes and tracks contract payments.
  • Develops and facilitates professional learning experiences and provides resources related to central accounting, state accounting, and procurement, and assists with training resource updates on central accounting webpages.
  • Serves as a system administrator for timekeeping and expense reimbursement systems.
  • Reviews and interprets data on vouchers, invoices, and other source documents to ensure accuracy, and completeness, and applies payment.
  • Provides leadership in the hiring, supervision, and potential discipline of staff. Conducts performance management activities including establishing annual goals related to the strategic plan, holding check-in meetings to discuss goal progress, and completing performance appraisals. Facilitates a continuous learning environment by promoting professional development to ensure all employees have the opportunity and skills to be efficient and effective in meeting the goals of the agency. Delegates work and projects appropriately among staff.
  • Develops and prepares reports ensuring accuracy and compliance with requirements.
  • Maintains regular & reliable attendance, travels independently, and works in a variety of settings.

Working Conditions and Travel:

This position requires approximately 95% of work time spent in an office environment; the remaining 5% is spent traveling or working in alternative sites such as conferences and off-site meetings. There is also approximately four days of overnight travel per year.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of experience related to the essential functions of the position. Any equivalent education and\or work experience may be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

Preferred Qualifications: State of Nebraska Pre-Audit certified and Nebraska state government experience working with Kronos, JD Edwards financial system, and the State Accounting Manual.
