Location: Any of our AGL Locations (Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Newcastle, Brisbane, Muswellbrook {Bayswater Power Station} or Traralgon {Loy Yang Power Station)

About the Role:

As the Principal Electrical Engineer is to lead electrical engineering scopes of work being undertaken for new greenfield grid-scale energy projects (from concept to handover) to support Construction and AGL’s vision.

This will include defining technical requirements, reviewing key engineering deliverables for studies and projects and supporting construction and commissioning activities within the Construction and Power Development portfolios.

What you will be doing:

  • Guide the electrical engineering team across all project phases, ensuring compliance with HSE legislation, AGL standards, and industry best practices while managing contractors, OEMs, and consultants.
  • Develop, review, and ensure timely delivery of technical specifications, design criteria, and engineering documentation for greenfield grid-scale energy projects, maintaining adherence to contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the electrical scope from concept through commissioning, including risk management, contract tendering, construction supervision, quality assurance, and lessons learned integration.
  • Foster close working relationships with cross-disciplinary teams, demonstrate leadership aligned with AGL values, and provide coaching and support to junior engineers.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, contribute to technical problem-solving, and promote a culture of continuous improvement and effective teamwork within the organisation.

What you need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, eligible for Engineers Australia membership and preferably CPEng certification.
  • In-depth knowledge of power industry standards, construction practices, and primary/secondary electrical systems including SCADA, substations, transmission, generators, and transformers.
  • Project management experience, risk-optimised decision-making, and balancing multiple stakeholder needs through effective communication and influence.
  • Experience in technical engineering, with leadership, teamwork, and coaching skills, especially in renewable energy and energy storage projects.
